The Boston University Terriers broke open a close game with a 21-2 run to start the second half and held off a late Norfolk State Spartans charge to earn a 71-63 victory on Wednesday at Echols Hall in Norfolk, Va.

The Terriers run took 7:25 until Spartans guard Jeffrey Short finally stopped the bleeding with a jumper. During that stretch, Norfolk (1-2) went from having a 34-32 halftime lead to facing a 53-36 deficit. While Boston University (1-1) was scoring at will, the Spartans went 1-8 from the floor, turned the ball over five times and committed seven fouls .

Norfolk State then went on a 19-6 run of its own to get to within four at 59-55. But Boston University scored the next seven points to put the game away.

Four of the five Boston University starters finished in double figures, led by guard John Papale’s 17. Guard Cedric Hankerson had 16 points and seven assists, while forward Nathan Dieudonne had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Short led all scorers with 28 points, and guard Malik Thomas added 19 for the Spartans, which lost their second consecutive game. The rest of the squad managed just 16 points on 4-18 shooting.
