Colgate overcame a shaky start and hung on at the end to beat cold-shooting Navy 57-51 in a first-round Patriot League tournament game Monday night in Hamilton, N.Y.

With the win, the seventh-seeded Raiders (13-17) advance to the quarterfinals, where they will play second-seeded American on Wednesday night.

The Midshipmen (9-21) end their season with a five-game losing streak. They have lost 14 consecutive games in conference-tournament play, the longest such active streak in Division I.

The Raiders, who started the game making seven turnovers in the first seven minutes, took the lead for good on a 7-0 run that gave them a 27-21 halftime advantage.

Colgate didn’t clinch the win until guard Damon Sherman-Newsome hit two free throws with 7.9 seconds left to give the Raiders a 55-51 cushion. Colgate guard Austin Tillotson added two more free throws with 1.7 seconds remaining.

Navy guard Brandon Venturini led all scorers with 24 points on 11-of-21 shooting. The rest of the team shot 9-for-31 from the field.

Sherman-Newsome led Colgate with 16 points. Guard Luke Roh and center Ethan Jacobs each added 10 points for the Raiders, and Jacobs grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

Colgate led 39-26 less than seven minutes into the second half, but Navy went on an 8-0 run that cut that margin to 39-34 with 10:19 left in the game.

Tillotson ended Navy’s run with a 3-pointer, and the Raiders led 46-36 with less than four minutes left.

The Midshipmen were able to trim that down to 53-51 with 8.9 seconds left before the Raiders sealed the win at the free-throw line.
