College basketball game roundup: No. 7 Villanova routs Temple

VILLANOVA, Pa. — Guards Josh Hart and Darrun Hilliard each scored 20 points to lead No. 7 Villanova past Temple 85-62 on Sunday.

The Wildcats (10-0) can reach 11-0 for the second straight season with a win over Syracuse in their next game.

Hart and Hilliard are the first Wildcats to score 20 points this season. Both players made 6 of 7 shots from the field and each made three 3-pointers.

Villanova shot 52.9 percent while Temple was held to just 34.6 percent. The Wildcats also made 9 of 15 from 3-point range, led by Hart and Hilliard. The duo combined to make 6 of 7 from long range.

Villanova won the rebounding battle 34-31.

Guard Quenton DeCosey led the Owls (6-4) with 18 points.

Tennessee 67, No. 15 Butler 55

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Guard Josh Richardson scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half for Tennessee in the upset win.

Butler (8-2) blew a 12-point lead in the second half. Tennessee’s surge was led by Richardson, who scored eight straight points as part of a 12-0 run by the Volunteers.

A basket by forward Armani Moore with 6:15 remaining gave Tennessee (4-3) the lead for good.

No. 24 St. John’s 74, Fordham 53

NEW YORK — Guard Rysheed Jordan scored a career-high 24 points for St. John’s in the ECAC Holiday Festival.

Guard D’Angelo Harrison scored 22 points for St. John’s (8-1).

The Red Storm forced the Rams to commit 20 turnovers and held them to just shot 39 percent shooting.

Guard Eric Paschall led Fordham (3-5) with 14 points.

No. 4 Louisville 68, UNC Wilmington 57

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Louisville nearly let a big lead get away, but held on as Terry Rozier and Montrezl Harrell each scored 19 points for the Cardinals.

Louisville had an 18-point lead early in the second half but the Seahawks used a 15-0 run to cut to lead to 52-50.

Rozier scored six of Louisville’s next 10 points to help stave off the rally and give coach Rick Pitino his 350th victory.

Harrell added 17 rebounds for the Cardinals (9-0). The Seahawks fell to 3-3 under coach Kevin Keatts, who was a Pitino assistant the past three years.

No. 14 Iowa State 88, Southern 78

AMES, Iowa — Georges Niang and Bryce Dejean-Jones scored 18 points apiece for Iowa State, which won its fifth straight game.

The Cyclones (8-1) led by 27 before a late Southern run reduced the margin to 10 points with 2:31 to play. Tre Lynch scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half to lead Southern (2-8).

Iowa State was just 3 of 17 from 3-point range.

No. 17 Washington 81, Eastern Washington 77

SEATTLE — Trailing by 11 points near the midpoint of the second half and by five with five minutes remaining, Washington rallied for a nonconference win.

Center Robert Upshaw scored 21 points, including the tip-in that put the Huskies ahead to stay, 71-70, with 1:40 left. Guard Nigel Williams-Goss and Darin Johnson added late 3-pointers to pad the margin for Washington (8-0). Williams-Goss finished with 19 points, and Huskies guard Andrew Andrews added 18.

Guard Tyler Harvey led Eastern Washington (8-2) with 21 points.

No. 22 West Virginia 69, Marshall 66

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Juwan Staten scored 15 points, including two free throws with seven seconds left to preserve West Virginia’s victory.

West Virginia (9-1) trailed for much of the game, and Marshall (3-3) led by eight points with 11:31 left in the game.

Staten’s pull-up jumper from the lane put the Mountaineers ahead to stay at 62-60 with 2:16 left.

Staten’s free throws in the closing seconds gave West Virginia a three-point lead, and Marshall’s JP Kambola missed a 3-point shot at the buzzer.
