Denver 77, Saint Joseph’s 73 (OT)

Senior guard Brett Olson made two big 3-pointers in overtime and finished with 27 points, leading Denver to a 77-73 victory over Saint Joseph’s on Monday night at Magness Arena in Denver.

Olson made nine of 12 field-goal attempts to lead four players who scored in double figures for Denver (6-7). Junior guard Nate Engesser and senior guard Cam Griffin scored 15 points apiece. Junior guard Marcus Byrd had 12.

Junior forward Isaiah Miles scored 24 points for Saint Joseph’s (6-5). Sophomore forward DeAndre Bembry had 20 points and eight rebounds. Junior guard Aaron Brown scored 12 points.

Olson made a 3-pointer with 4:06 to go and another with 16 seconds remaining to help Denver maintain a slim lead throughout the extra session.

Olson sank three 3-pointers in the first five minutes to help Denver take a 15-7 lead. Saint Joseph’s cut the deficit to one on a 3-pointer by Miles and took a 17-16 lead on a dunk by Brown.

Denver briefly reclaimed the lead on a layup by Byrd, but Saint Joseph’s responded with an 8-2 run to go up 23-18. The Pioneers closed to within two, but the Hawks scored the last five points of the half to take a 37-30 lead at the break.

The Pioneers charged back in the second half, taking a 43-42 lead on a dunk by sophomore guard Duke Douglas with 14:42 to play. The Hawks answered with an 11-0 run to go ahead 54-45 on a 3-pointer by Miles with 9:58 to go. Olson helped the Pioneers cut the deficit to one with 3:47 remaining and forced overtime after making two free throws to tie the game with 42 seconds to play.
