Duquesne 81, Howard 63

The Duquesne Dukes, one of the highest-scoring teams in the country, kept up that trend Tuesday night and ended the three-game win streak of the Howard Bison in the process, 81-63, at the AJ Palumbo Center in Pittsburgh, Pa.

The Dukes, who came in averaging 91.3 points a game, were led by a 17 points and eight rebounds from forward L.G. Gill, while Howard (4-4) was paced by the return of leading scorer James Daniels, who poured in a game-high 22 points. Daniels missed the Bison’s last outing with a thigh contusion and was a game-time decision Tuesday, but he came back in a big way even in the loss.

Duquesne (3-1) jumped out to a 41-30 halftime lead and stayed on its quick pace throughout. The Dukes’ lead grew to 20 points with just over 3 minutes to play. They also had three other players in double figures: forward TySean Powell (17 points), guard Micah Mason (12 points) and guard Eric James (11 points). Powell was a perfect 6-of-6 from the field.

Guard James Miller, who was coming off a career-high 33 point night against Gwynedd, added 14 points for the Bison, who also got 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds from guard James Carlton.

This was just the second-ever meeting between the two teams with Duquesne now owning a 2-0 advantage. They only other meeting was in 2007 when the Dukes rolled 129-59. Duquesne set a school record for points (129) in that game and tied a 92-year school record for margin of victory.

The Bison will next open Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference action by playing back-to-back games. Howard will first host North Carolina A&T on Saturday and then head to New Jersey to face North Carolina Central in the opening round of the Big Apple Classic.
