Guard Dwight Meikle scored 28 points and pulled down 15 rebounds to lead Hampton to a 75-66 nonconference victory over Northern Arizona on Sunday in Norfolk, Va.

Guards Brian Darden and Quinton Chievous each added 10 points for Hampton (6-6), which won for the fifth time in six games.

The Pirates led 31-23 at halftime and started the second half effectively, but the Lumberjacks pulled within 42-37 on two free throws by guard Jaleni Neely.

Hampton then went on a 9-1 run, and Northern Arizona (4-8) didn’t get back within double digits until and a layup by forward Gaellan Bewernick to cut the margin to 75-66 with 16 seconds left.

Neely scored 17 points to lead Northern Arizona, but he shot 3-for-11 from the floor. Bewernick finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds, while guard Aaseem Dixon added 13 points off the bench.

The Lumberjacks dominated the offensive glass, with 23 of their 48 rebounds coming on that end of the floor. However, they shot just 31.3 percent from the floor and missed 18 of 22 3-point attempts.

Hampton hit 43.6 percent of its shots from the floor, but forced 22 turnovers and kept Northern Arizona from getting comfortable on offense.

The Lumberjacks lost their second game in a row.
