Junior guard Juan’ya Green poured in a game-high 17 points and the Hofstra Pride scored a 68-51 win against the Appalachian State Mountaineers at the Holmes Convocation Center in Boone, N.C., on Sunday afternoon.
Green led five players in double figures as Hofstra (6-2) won its third straight. Guard Malik Nichols added 10 points and 10 rebounds. Forward Ameen Tanksley contributed 13 points while guard Dion Nesmith had 11 and guard Brian Bernardi also scored 10. Tanksley came into the game having made 20 of 25 3-point tries in the previous four games but he went 1-for-5 from deep against App State.
Green and Tanksley have scored in double digits in each of Hofstra’s games this season.
The Pride are off to their best start since the 2008-09 team, which won six of its first seven.
Frank Eaves, a junior guard, scored a team-high 13 points for Appalachian State (3-3), which saw its three-game winning streak snapped. The Mountaineers struggled to shoot 34 percent (18 of 53) from the field including just 3-of-17 from 3-point range.
Despite Nichols’ 10 boards, App State outrebounded Hofstra by a 41-34 margin.
Appalachian State is the alma mater of Hofstra coach Jim Fox’s brother.
