Howard 57, IUPUI 47
James Carlton scored six of his 17 points in a 10-point second-half run that helped the Howard Bison pull away for a 57-47 victory over the visiting IUPUI Jaguars Monday at the Burr Gymnasium in Washington.
Howard was clinging to a 39-37 lead with just over nine minutes left when Carlton, a guard, made a 3-point play and later added a lay-up and a free throw.
The Bison eventually scored 10 straight for a 49-37 lead with just over four minutes left.
Guard James Daniel III led Howard (6-6) with a game-high 18 points.
Center Marcel Boyd didn’t score a point but played a critical role inside with 13 rebounds as the Bison snapped a two-game losing streak.
IUPUI (2-8) now has lost six straight. Guard Leo Svete led the Jaguars with nine points.
This was the first meeting between the two and came as part of the Gotham Classic, where each team plays four games in different venues.
Howard next heads to California for a match-up with Pepperdine on Wednesday night. IUPUI goes home for its next match-up, a game with South Alabama on Dec. 20.
