Iowa State 85, Texas 77

AUSTIN, Texas — Iowa State represents a nearly impossible matchup for opposing coaches. All five average at least 10 points a game.

In the Cyclones’ 85-77 victory at Texas on Saturday, three starters and two reserves pulled off double figures.

It was a momentous win for No. 14 Iowa State (20-6, 10-4 Big 12), which beat Texas in Austin for the first time in a decade while getting its 20th win as the season ticks down to its final two weeks.

Texas (17-10, 6-8) threatened late, twice cutting Iowa State’s margin to five points in the final 1:29. But the Cyclones survived the surges.

Guards Georges Niang and Matt Thomas each scored 17 points to lead the Cyclones. Guard Bryce Dejean-Jones added 16 off the bench, guard Naz Long scored 12 and forward Dustin Hogue had 11.

Texas guard Kendal Yancy led all scorers with 29 points, hitting 6 of 9 from 3-point range. It was more than double his career high of 14.

Fellow guard Isaiah Taylor scored 23. But the Longhorn frontcourt managed only four points.

Iowa State shot 46.4 percent (26 of 56), including 57.1 percent from 3-point range (12 of 21).

Texas hit just 37.5 percent (9 of 24) from 3-point range and shot 40.8 percent overall (29 of 71).

The Cyclones also had a big edge at the free-throw line, where they hit 21 of 33. Texas attempted just 12 foul shots, hitting 10.

NOTES: Texas freshman F Myles Turner and his family were recognized in pregame ceremonies. Turner was a member of the U.S. team that won last year’s FIBA Americas U18 Championship. Turner was coming off consecutive double-doubles but the Cyclones held him to six points and 10 rebounds Saturday. … Iowa State F Jameel McKay had been on a hot streak since breaking into the starting lineup Feb. 5. He had averaged a team-high 15.6 points this month, but he scored just three points Saturday.
