LeBron James has still picked up opposing guards for stretches in games, including the first game against the Washington Wizards when he (unsuccessfully) defended John Wall at times. But Irving said Wednesday he wants that responsibility going forward.

“If one person gets going, whether it’s the 1 or 2 [point guard or shooting guard], I’m going to guard them,” Irving said. “It’s more or less a personal challenge.

“I talked to our coaching staff beforehand and told them, ‘Whenever I have the chance to guard the point guard, just leave me on him.”
