Joel Embiid Yet to be Cleared for 5-on-5 Drills

76ers center Joel Embiid has not been cleared for 5-on-5 drills, and the team will take a cautious approach in his return from his injured left knee.

Embiid’s career has been riddled with injuries, and he missed his first two NBA seasons. Embiid played only 31 games last season and had surgery in March to repair a torn meniscus in his knee.

Team president Bryan Colangelo and coach Brett Brown said Wednesday the team will soon decide how to handle his playing time when training camp opens next week.

“If you walk in the gym, it looks like he could play 5-on-5 basketball,” Colangelo said. “But we’re going to take our cues from the people who know best.”

According to Colangelo, those people favor a “hyperconservative progression” for Embiid.

“Will he be ramping that up throughout the preseason?” Colangelo said. “Yes. How many games, we’re not certain. Is it every game? We don’t know. That will be based on what we’re told.”

Report: Markelle Fultz No Longer Experiencing Shoulder Soreness

Basketball Insiders

Published

on

Philadelphia 76ers rookie guard Markelle Fultz is no longer experiencing shoulder soreness and will be evaluated in three weeks, the team said Saturday.

The Sixers said Fultz will ramp up his basketball activities in the interim.

Fultz, selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 draft, has played in just four games and was shut down on Oct. 29 due to soreness in his right shoulder and a scapular muscle imbalance.

The 19-year-old has resisted jump shots while relying almost exclusively on drives to the basket. He is shooting 33 percent (9-of-27) from the floor and 50 percent (6-of-12) from the free throw line. Off the bench, he has averaged 19 minutes.

Fultz’s shooting woes have been underscored by an altered shooting motion that has made some wonder whether the shooting tweak led to the shoulder injury or the shoulder injury forced him to change his shot.
