Senior forward Dan Trist sank the game-winning free throw with 0.4 seconds remaining, lifting Lafayette to an 82-81 nonconference win over Sacred Heart on Monday night in Easton, Pa.

Five players scored in double figures for the Leopards (6-2). Trist led the way with 20 points, followed by guard Joey Ptasinski and forward Seth Hinrich with 14 points apiece. Freshman forward Matt Klinewski added 11 points, and guard Bryce Scott had 10.

Sacred Heart (4-4) jumped out to a 31-18 lead midway through the first half, but Lafayette closed the period on a 28-13 run to lead 46-44 at the break.

Lafayette remained in control in the second half until Pioneers forward Jordan Allen’s three-point play with 27.2 seconds remaining. Allen’s free throw after the bucket forged an 81-81 deadlock, but Trist was fouled at the buzzer.

A quick review put 0.4 seconds on the clock before Trist delivered the winning point.

Sophomore forward De’von Barnett’s 18 points paced Sacred Heart, which already is on the cusp of matching the win total of last season’s 5-26 club. Guard Cane Broome, who swept the Northeast Conference Player and Rookie of the Week honors earlier Monday, added 14 points. Guard Evan Kelley also scored 14, and Allen had 12.

Lafayette improved to 4-0 this season against opponents from the NEC.
