Freshman guard Elvar Fridriksson had 17 points and seven assists, helping visiting LIU-Brooklyn earn its first win of the season with an 83-70 victory over Maine on Tuesday evening at Cross Insurance Center in Orono, Maine.

Senior forward Landon Atterberry added 14 points and six rebounds for LIU-Brooklyn (1-6), which made all seven of its 3-point attempts in the second period.

Sophomore swingman Garet Beal had 12 points and nine rebounds for Maine (1-7), which went 1 for 11 from beyond the arc in the second half.

Maine got off to a slow start but rallied to take the lead later in the opening half. The Black Bears held a 30-24 lead with just over two minutes remaining, but the Blackbirds narrowed the gap before halftime.

Beal missed a 3-pointer that would have given Maine a seven-point lead. Instead, LIU-Brooklyn had an opportunity for a transition basket in the final seconds.

The Blackbirds passed the ball inside to sophomore forward Glenn Feidanga, who missed a layup but drew a foul with five seconds to play. Feidanga made both free throws, cutting the Black Bears’ lead to 30-26 going into the locker room at the break.

LIU-Brooklyn carried that surge into the second half, opening with a 12-2 run to take a 42-36 lead with 16 minutes remaining. Senior guard Gerrell Martin and sophomore guard Iverson Fleming made 3-pointers moments later as the Blackbirds extended their lead to 53-42 with 13:20 to go.

LIU-Brooklyn went up by 15 when Fleming made another 3-pointer with 10:40 to play. Maine briefly cut the deficit to single digits, but the Black Bears couldn’t sustain the momentum.
