Maryland-Eastern Shore 53, Mount St. Mary’s 41

Guard Devon Walker scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half to help visiting the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks hold off the Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers, 53-41, Wednesday night in Emmitsburg, Md.

It was the first win at UMES (1-2) for first-year coach Bobby Collins, who arrived after four straight winning season at Division II Winston-Salem State.

Forward Dominique Elliott contributed eight points and seven rebounds and forward Mike Myers added seven points and seven rebounds in a defensive struggle as UMES beat the Mountaineers for the second straight year.

Mount St. Mary’s (0-2) scored its fewest points in a game in three seasons under up-tempo coach Jamion Christian, who guided the Mountaineers to the NCAA tournament last year. The previous low was 48 in Christian’s head coaching debut.

Guard Byron Ashe scored all nine of his points in the second half. Guard Junior Robinson, the shortest player in Division I at 5-foot-5, had eight points and four assists for the Mountaineers. His back-to-back 3-pointers early in the second half triggered a Mountaineers rally which fell short.

Mount St. Mary’s whittled a 15-point deficit to five as Ashe scored six straight points. But Hawks guard Devin Martin answered with a 3-pointer with 7:53 left while Mount St. Mary’s drifted into a 7-minute, 34-second field goal drought.

For the game, the Mountaineers shot 30 percent from the floor and missed 12 of their first 13 attempts from beyond the arc.

UMES scored on its first possession and never trailed. Martin made a 3-pointer to hike the lead to double-digits at 14-4. Later in the half, guard Ryan Andino came off the bench and hit back-to-back 3-pointers. Guard Mark Blackmon’s layup late in the half gave Maryland Eastern Shore its biggest lead of the night, 26-11.
