NBA roundup: Cardwell Jones dies

Caldwell Jones, a key member of the Philadelphia 76ers teams that reached the NBA Finals in 1977, 1980 and 1982, died Sunday after suffering a heart attack on a suburban Atlanta golf course. He was 64.

The 6-foot-11 center was a rugged defender and named to the NBA All-Defensive first team in 1981 and 1982.

Jones was drafted by the 76ers out of Albany State. In his 17-year career, he averaged 7.9 points, 8.2 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game. He also played for the Houston Rockets, Chicago Bulls, Portland Trail Blazers and San Antonio Spurs.

–The Los Angeles Lakers signed shooting guard Wayne Ellington, the team announced.

Ellington, a five-year NBA veteran, has career averages of 6.4 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.0 assists. Last season in Dallas, Ellington averaged 3.2 points in 45 games.

–The Dallas Mavericks signed free-agent guard Doron Lamb.

The 6-foot-4, 200-pound Lamb is a three-year NBA veteran who averaged 3.6 points and 13.1 minutes in 53 games with the Magic last season.

–The Cleveland Cavaliers will bring in point guard A.J. Price for training camp, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported.

Price played in only 28 games for the Minnesota Timberwolves last season. The 6-foot-2 Price averaged 1.6 points, 0.5 assists and 0.4 rebounds in 3.5 minutes per game.

–The Charlotte Hornets signed free agent guard Justin Cobbs, forward Dallas Lauderdale and center Brian Qvale to its training camp roster, the team announced.
