Thibodeau: Rose has to get out there and play

When asked if Rose looked fatigued in the second half of Monday’s game, something the 26 year-old discussed before Monday’s shootaround in regard to his muscle recovery after missing over a week, Thibodeau chafed.

“Oh I don’t know. Jesus. He’s got to get out there and play,” Thibodeau said. “I thought he did a lot of good things. You could see he’s not real comfortable with the ball yet, but that will come. When Derrick strings some games together he’s going to take off. He’s got to go. That’s the bottom line. He’s got to go.”

This is one of the first times we’ve seen genuine frustration from Thibodeau over Rose’s inconsistent presence on the floor due to injuries. In the past Thibodeau has been very supportive and understanding of Rose’s decisions not to play, but after basically two years without him, Thibodeau appears to want Rose to push himself a little more. Rose has missed eight games so far this year, including four most recently because of an ailing hamstring. The other four were due to sprained ankles.

Rose had a decent showing, scoring 18 points and dishing out five assists, but struggled to contain Trey Burke as he went for 18 points and 10 assists. Pau Gasol also returned after missing a couple games to injury and had a much stronger performance, leading the way for the Bulls with 23 points, nine rebounds and four assists.

Rose recently caused a lot of controversy by saying that he was thinking about the long-term picture and didn’t want to be hurting during his post-playing days, even if it means sitting out games now.

However, patience seems to be wearing out in Chicago. Championship windows don’t stay open often and right now the Bulls are a legitimate title contender, especially with the Cleveland Cavaliers struggling the way they are. And, faith in Rose looks to be lower than ever, as all Thibodeau could say when asked if he thought if Rose would be available for their next game against the Denver Nuggets, the second of a back-to-back, was “Jeez, I hope so.”

Dahntay Jones attempting comeback

NBA veteran Dahntay Jones is set for a return to the NBA D-League a source tells DLD.

At 33 years old, the Duke alum will make a return to the NBA D-League having last played for the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in 2007-2008. In 10 games, Jones averaged 24.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.1 blocks in 37.1 minutes.

At 33 years of age, Jones’ window to the NBA is quickly coming to a close. The 10-year veteran was one of the final training camp cuts by the Utah Jazz, but with his experience could be poised for a quick return if he goes into the D-League and has similar success that he did back in the 07-08 season.

Jones’ calling card has always been his defense; for a team in need of depth in the backcourt or someone who they can confidently ask to guard some of the best guards in the league for short stints, Jones will strongly be considered.

MRI confirms ruptured Achilles for Xavier Henry

Lakers guard Xavier Henry underwent an MRI exam today which revealed a ruptured left Achilles tendon. Henry suffered the injury at this morning’s practice. He is scheduled to have surgery tomorrow morning with Dr. Neal ElAttrache and Dr. Steve Lombardo of the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic. Henry is expected to be out the remainder of the season. Henry, who re-signed with the Lakers as a free agent on July 25, has appeared in nine games this season, averaging 2.2 points, 0.4 rebounds, 0.3 assists, and 0.33 steals in 9.5 minutes per game. The five-year pro averaged career-highs in points (10.0), rebounds (2.7), and assists (1.2) per game last season.

This is the most devastating injury in what has been a long string of setbacks for Henry right as he was establishing himself as a career. He nearly found himself out of the league before the Lakers gave him a chance last year. He proved that he was being written off a little bit too early, but unfortunately injuries cut him bounce-back year short and now they have done so once again. The projected timetable for recovery for a ruptured Achilles tendon is typically 8-12 months. Henry has a guaranteed contract for just over $1 million this season and was already on the cut block for the Lakers prior to the injury.

The Lakers have been working out several veterans recently, including Quincy Miller, Tyrus Thomas and Roscoe Smith. They currently have 15 players under contract, the maximum allowed by the league, but due to the fact that three are out for the season (Steve Nash, Julius Randle and Henry) they could be eligible for a hardship exception that allows them to carry a 16th player.
