The Brooklyn Nets signed center Jason Collins to a second 10-day contract on Wednesday.

The NBA’s first openly gay player had signed the first 10-day deal with the Nets on Feb. 23. Players are allowed to sign two 10-day contracts but then must be signed for the remainder of the season if a team wishes to keep them on the roster.

Collins, a 13-year NBA veteran. has played in five games for the Nets and totaled three points and five rebounds in 36 minutes. He previously was with the team from 2001 to 2008.

Earlier in the week, Collins declined to comment on reports that a new deal was set.

“I don’t know anything about that,” Collins said Monday night at a pregame press conference. “I let my agent handle the business side. … I just try to focus on the basketball as much as possible.”

Despite his meager on-court production, Collins gained celebrity status after joining the Nets. His jersey immediately became the NBA’s best-seller.

The Nets play host to the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday night.
