Guard D’Shon Taylor scored a season-high 24 points, and guard Jeffrey Short added 20 as Norfolk State beat Coppin State 88-69 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game Monday in Norfolk, Va.

Forward RaShid Gaston scored 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, and guard Malik Thomas finished with 14 for the Spartans (6-4, 2-0 MEAC). Norfolk State earned its fourth win in five games.

Guard Taariq Cephas scored 16 points for Coppin State (1-7, 0-2). Forward Arnold Fripp and guard Sterling Smith had 15 points apiece for the Eagles, who dropped their third consecutive road game.

Norfolk State led from the opening tip, and Gaston scored 14 first-half points as the Spartans carried a 42-37 lead at the break. Taylor made 3-pointer to put Norfolk State on top 51-46 with 15 minutes left in the game.

The Spartans then went on a 11-3 run, and a layup by Gaston increased the lead to 62-49 with 10 minutes remaining. Norfolk State stayed in control the rest of the way, and two 3-pointers by Taylor provided a 85-65 lead with 2:26 left.

Coppin State plays its second home game of the season when it hosts Hofstra on Wednesday night. Norfolk State travels to Mount St. Mary’s on Saturday.
