Guard Trey Freeman scored 13 points, and three of his Old Dominion teammates also finished in double figures as the Monarchs beat Richmond 63-57 Tuesday night in Norfolk, Va.

Forward Richard Ross and guard Jordan Baker each scored 12 points for Old Dominion (2-0), which snapped a three-game losing streak to the Spiders. Forward Denzell Taylor also had 10 points for the Monarchs.

Richmond forward T.J. Cline scored 10 of his career-high 15 points in the first half, and guard ShawnDre’ Jones added 12 points for the Spiders (1-1). Forward Alonzo Nelson-Ododa contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Spiders.

After scoring the game’s first points, Richmond did not lead again until guard Terry Allen made 3-pointer that provided a 52-51 margin with 5:48 left in the game. Old Dominion regrouped, and a jumper by Ross and layup by Freeman helped the Monarchs retake a 55-52 lead with 2:34 left.

Old Dominion then made a couple of big stops, and a 3-pointer by Baker increased the lead to 60-53 with 1:10 remaining. The Monarchs closed out the game by converting three of four free throws in the final minute.

Old Dominion committed just nine turnovers in the game.

The Monarchs have four returning starters from last year’s team, but it was guard Ambrose Mosley who came off the bench and made a 3-pointer on his first attempt to give Old Dominion a 22-13 lead midway through the first half.

A layup and a jumper by Cline pulled Richmond to within 26-20 with 3:54 left in the half. However, a layup by guard Keenan Palmore provided Old Dominion with a 32-24 lead at the break.

Old Dominion plays LSU at the Paradise Jam Tournament in the U.S. Virgin Islands on Friday. Richmond hosts High Point on Saturday.
