The Indiana Pacers gave up trying to sign guard Gal Mekel because of complications with Mekel’s visa and instead signed free-agent guard A.J. Price.
The Pacers announced Price’s signing on Thursday.
The Pacers have immediate need for backcourt help with injuries to guards Rodney Stuckey (foot), George Hill (knee) and C.J. Watson (foot).
The Pacers were granted a hardship exception to sign a 16th player to their roster, and the Pacers had Mekel in mind, according to an ESPN.com report. The Pacers flew Mekel, who had been waived by the Dallas Mavericks, to Boston with the hope that he could meet the team in Boston and sign with the Pacers. But the team learned the Israeli point guard’s visa likely would not be renewed until Friday.
The hardship waiver was expected to expire on Thursday, so the Pacers turned their attention to Price, who was released by the Cleveland Cavaliers on Nov. 1.
Price, a second-round draft pick by the Pacers in 2009, has also played in Washington, Minnesota and Cleveland since leaving Indiana after the 2011-12 season.
He played in six preseason games for the Cavaliers this season, averaging 7.2 points and 1.5 assists in 13.3 minutes per game.
