The NBA salary cap is projected to rise by about $5 million for next season, sources told ESPN.com.

A league memo sent to all 30 teams this week said the cap is expected to increase from $58.6 million to $63.2 million. The luxury-tax threshold would jump from $71.7 million to $77 million, according to ESPN’s sources.

The official cap and luxury tax will be announced in early July after a league audit.

The new projection for 2014-15 would represent a 7.7 percent increase over this season. The typical rise reportedly is 4.5 percent.

This is the third time this season that the league has bumped its projections for 2014-15, according to NBA salary-cap expert Larry Coon.

The projected $5 million expansion could allow teams such as Chicago and Houston to make a run at signing star free agent Carmelo Anthony away from the New York Knicks this summer.
