Forward Terry Allen scored all 17 of his points in the second half, and Richmond survived a cold night from beyond the arc to earn a 65-54 victory over South Alabama in a Gotham Classic game Thursday in Richmond, Va.
The Spiders (5-4) took 23 of their 58 shots from 3-point range, thanks to a Jaguars zone that tried to keep the team out of the paint. Richmond hit just six of its long-distance attempts, a mediocre 26.1 percent, but South Alabama was worse. The Jaguars shot just 35.4 percent from the field and 3-for-19 (15-.8 percent) from 3-point range.
Guard Kendall Anthony led the Spiders with 18 points, and guard ShawnDre’ Jones added 14 points off the bench. Allen grabbed nine rebounds.
No South Alabama player finished with double figures, but six Jaguars finished with between seven and nine points.
Richmond took a 10-point lead in the first half on two occasions but led just 28-25 at the break.
South Alabama (2-6) went on a 7-0 run to take a 46-44 lead in the second half, but the Spiders responded with a 6-0 surge to jump back in front. Forward Georgi Boyanov hit a jumper to get the Jaguars within 50-48, but the Spiders ended the game on a 15-6 run.
The Spiders improved to 2-0 in the Gotham Classic with two games remaining: Saturday against Pepperdine at Madison Square Garden and Tuesday at home against IUPUI.
The Jaguars play host to IUPUI on Saturday, then conclude the tournament at home against Howard on Tuesday.
