San Diego State opened up a big early lead and never looked back, routing Wyoming 67-41 in a battle between two of the Mountain West Conference’s top teams Wednesday night at Viejas Arena in San Diego.

Senior guard Aqeel Quinn and junior forward Winston Shepard scored 18 points apiece for San Diego State (19-6, 9-3 Mountain West), which moved into sole possession of first place ahead of Wyoming and Boise State. Quinn, the team’s scoring leader, bounced back from a poor performance Sunday, when he was held to five points on 2-of-10 shooting in a loss to the Broncos.

Senior forward Derek Cooke Jr. had 13 points and six rebounds for Wyoming (19-6, 8-4), which lost its second game in a row. Junior guard Josh Adams added 12 points and five rebounds.

San Diego State mounted an early 15-0 run and raced out to an 18-3 lead over the first six minutes. The Aztecs extended their lead to 34-12 on a 3-pointer by Quinn with 4:45 to play in the opening period.

The Aztecs led 36-14 at the break and went up by as many as 29 points on multiple occasions in the second half.
