The Cleveland Cavaliers will sign 13-year NBA veteran Kendrick Perkins with their final roster spot for the playoffs, league sources told ESPN.
Cleveland will sign Perkins on Wednesday, the final day of the regular season, just as it did in 2016 when guard Dahntay Jones was added, and in 2017 when both Jones and center Edy Tavares were added for the Cavs’ playoff run.
Perkins was a member of the Cavs team that made the 2015 NBA Finals and was back with them for training camp this fall, before being released during the preseason. He played part of the season for the Canton Charge, the Cavs’ G League affiliate.
The Cavs are adding Perkins more for the veteran leadership he can provide to the Cavs’ locker room, and less for his on-court contributions, league sources told ESPN.
Sources: Clippers Prepared to Offer Tobias Harris, 12th or 13th Pick for Kawhi Leonard
It’s also unclear if the Spurs would be willing to trade [Kawhi] Leonard to the Lakers or any other team. If they are, other teams might have more significant assets to offer, especially given that the Lakers do not have a lottery pick this year. They will select 25th in next week’s draft, a pick they got in a trade with Cleveland.
The Clippers have more to offer than the Lakers. They would be willing to create a package with forward Tobias Harris and the 12th or 13th pick in this year’s draft, according to a source not authorized to speak publicly.
