St. Joseph’s 52, Drexel 49

Saint Joseph’s continued its recent run of dominance over city rival Drexel, winning its fourth straight in the series between the two schools, 52-49, in a “road” game at the Daskalakis Athletic Center in Philadelphia on Monday night.

Drexel took its biggest lead of the game at 36-29 with 12:24 remaining following back-to-back buckets by freshman guard Rashann London, but that only seemed to wake up the sleeping Hawks. Saint Joseph’s ripped off a 12-0 run over nearly four minutes to take its largest lead at 41-36 with 8:44 remaining.

The Dragons hung around, however, and finally tied it up at 47 with three minutes to play. Saint Joseph’s re-took the lead, 49-47, on a layup by guard Aaron Brown with 1:30 remaining. Guard Damion Lee had a chance to tie the game with under 10 seconds left, but his 3-point shot clanked off the back rim.

Lee was the only player on the Dragons who could get anything going offensively, finishing with 21 points to go along with his seven rebounds albeit on 6-of-18 shooting. London, forward Mohamed Bah and forward Rodney Williams had six points apiece.

Saint Joseph’s cobbled together its scoring from wherever it could. Sophomore wing DeAndre Bembry led the way with 13 points but needed 13 shots to get there, while Brown had 11 points and freshman forward James Demery had 12.

As a team, the Hawks shot just 35.3 percent (18-of-51) overall, but held the Dragons to a 34.0 percent (18-of-53) mark, including 25.9 percent (7-of-27) in the second half.
