Top 25 roundup: Seton Hall tops No. 15 St. John’s

NEWARK, N.J. — Seton Hall ended St. John’s seven-game winning streak, knocking off the 15th-ranked Red Storm 78-67 in the Big East opener at the Prudential Center on Wednesday.

Junior guard Sterling Gibbs poured in 25 points and added eight assists to lead Seton Hall. Guard Jared Sina scored 14 points, forward Angel Delgado added 13 points and 12 rebounds and forward Brandon Mobley chipped in with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The Pirates were 10 of 23 from the 3-point range.

Guard D’Angelo Harrison topped St. John’s (11-2) with 25 points, but he fouled out with 1:35 left in the game and Seton Hall holding a 74-65 advantage.

Iowa State 83, Mississippi Valley State 33

Naz Long made 7 of 10 3-point shots as the No. 9 Cyclones cruised past Mississippi Valley State to give coach Fred Hoiberg his 100th victory in Ames.

Iowa State jumped out early despite missing six of their first eight free throws. The Cylones led 47-18 at the half as they upped their record to 10-1.

Wichita State 66, Drake 58

The 16th-ranked Shockers bounced back from a Christmas Day loss to win their 22nd straight Missouri Valley Conference game.

Guard Ron Baker scored 13 straight points late in the game to seal the victory. Tekele Cotton added 17 points for the Shockers.

Wisconsin 89, Penn State 72

The Nittany Lions run of futility at Wisconsin’s Kohl Center reached 14 games with an another loss to the No. 4 Badgers in the Big Ten opener Wednesday afternoon.

Forward Nigel Hayes led Wisconsin with 21 points. Center Frank Kaminsky scored 18 points and pulled down 14 rebounds. Forward Sam Dekker had 17 and point guard Treason Jackson chipped in 16 for the Badgers (13-1, 1-0 Big Ten), who extended their winning streak to six games.

Penn State guard D.J. Newbill led all scorers with 29 points. Guards Geno Thorpe and Shep Garner each scored 11 for the Nittany Lions Penn State (12-2, 0-1 Big Ten).

Oklahoma 61, George Mason 43

Junior guard Buddy Hield scored a game-high 17 points, leading the No. 22 Sooners to a victory over the Patriots at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Okla.

Hield made 7 of 13 shots from the field and 3 of 7 from 3-point range for Oklahoma (9-3), which has won five of its last six games. Junior guard Isaiah Cousins added 11 points and six rebounds for the Sooners.

Freshman center Shevon Thompson had nine points and 11 rebounds for George Mason (5-7), which shot 29.5 percent from the field and went 0-for-14 from beyond the arc.

Duke 84, Wofford 55

Freshman center Jahlil Okafor scored 24 points and fellow freshman forward Justise Winslow added 16 to help the No. 2 Blue Devils top the Terriers at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C.

Guard Quinn Cook added 15 and forward Amile Jefferson scored 10 for Duke.

Guard Karl Cochran had 13 points as the only Wofford player in double figures.

Villanova 67, Butler 55

Guard Ryan Arcidiacono scored 15 points and forward JayVaughn Pinkston added 13 to lead the No. 6 Wildcats past the Bulldogs at The Pavilion in Villanova, Pa.

Forward Daniel Ochefu had 10 points and forward Kris Jenkins scored 11 off the bench for Villanova.

Guard Alex Barlow and forward Andrew Chrabascz led Butler with 12 points each, while guard Kellen Dunham added 10.
