Fifteenth-ranked Virginia Commonwealth dominated Maryland-Eastern Shore from the opening tip and cruised to a 106-66 victory Thursday in Richmond, Va., as part of the Progressive Legends Classic.
Guard Terry Larrier scored 21 points to lead five Rams in double-figure scoring. Guard Treveon Graham added 17 points and six rebounds. Thirteen VCU players scored as the team used the lopsided result to empty its bench early.
The havoc defense that VCU prides itself on was in full effect against a UMES team playing its second game in two nights, forcing 20 Hawks turnovers. UMES kept the game from being even more lopsided by making 22 of its 28 free throws.
Guard Devon Walker led UMES with 21 points, with guard Devin Martin contributing 20 and forward Michael Myers 14. The rest of the team combined to shoot 3-for-14 from the field.
The Rams (3-0) advance to a Legends Classic semifinal against Villanova at Barclays Center in New York on Monday. VCU then will play either Michigan or Oregon on Tuesday, in the final or a consolation game.
UMES (1-3) plays at St. Francis (Pa.) on Saturday.
