Wisconsin 85, Oregon 77

MILWAUKEE — Guard Ben Brust drained a 3-pointer with 1:07 left to give Wisconsin the lead for good in an 85-77 victory over Oregon Saturday night in a third-round West Regional game at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

Brust’s shot was one of three on the day for distance and one of seven the Badgers knocked down in the second half as they erased a 12-point halftime deficit and advanced to the Sweet 16 for the third time in the last four seasons.

Forward Frank Kaminsky powered the comeback, scoring 11 of his team-leading 19 after the break and contributed nine in Wisconsin’s 17-9 run to open the second.

Kaminsky later gave Wisconsin its first lead since the first half when he hit an open 12-footer to make it 59-58 with 13:26 to play.

Oregon guard Joseph Young was a problem for Wisconsin all game long and he hit four from distance, finishing with a game-high 29 on 10-of-19 shooting.

After Wisconsin rallied to take back the lead, Young tied the game at 70 on an underhanded layup with five minutes left and forward Mike Moser’s two free throws put the Ducks ahead, 72-70, a minute later.

Forward Sam Dekker’s layup tied it up again at 72 heading into the final TV timeout with 3:05 left.

Young had a chance to tie it up with 11 seconds left but his shot was long and wound up in the hands of Dekker, who drew the foul with 10.4 seconds left and made both free throws to make it a five-point game.

Guard Jason Calliste finished with 20 and Moser added 12 for Oregon.

For all that had been said about the more high-tempo style the Badgers had shown this season, Wisconsin struggled to match the Ducks’ speed out of the gate.

The Ducks hit 10 of their first 17 shots and three of their first five 3-point attempts and led by as many as nine when Young sank 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions and went into the half up, 49-37.

NOTES: Wisconsin has made the NCAA Tournament in each of Bo Ryan’s 13 seasons as head coach but has advanced to the Sweet 16 only five times. … Oregon has won NCAA Tournament games in back-to-back seasons for the first time in school history. … Wisconsin came into the game with 27 victories this season, the third-highest total in program history. … The Badgers and Ducks entered Saturday having met five times but hadn’t played each other since Nov. 24, 1990, when Oregon took a 72-70 overtime decision in Eugene, Ore. The Ducks were 3-2 in the all-time series.
