Wonder if J.R. Smith wishes he had picked up his $6.4 million option for the 2015-16 season. No doubt, Smith thought his performance with the Cavaliers last season would help him secure a long-term deal.Maybe it will, but I doubt it.

Most key free agents have been signed. Teams with salary cap room are Philadelphia, Utah and Portland. Not sure if any other teams have an interest in Smith. It’s possible a good team way over the salary cap could offer Smith a one-year deal in the $3.3 million range — the “mini-mid level” exception. But that’s far less than his $6.4 million option. When Smith turned down the option for next season, the Cavs weren’t thrilled. At that point, they seriously began looking for another option at shooting guard.
