Celtics ended up with $12.9 million Traded Player Exception in their end of the Rajon Rondo deal with Dallas.

Boston is reported to have creatively used existing exceptions to absorb the players they received from the Dallas Mavericks creating a huge single salary cap exception.

The way it worked out is Boston applied Brandan Wright’s $5 million salary towards the $5.3 million exception they gained trading Keith Bogans. Jameer Nelson’s $2.7 million salary was applied to $3.8 million exception the Celtics obtained when they traded Joel Anthony. Jae Crowder’s $915K salary was absorbed by balance of the Anthony exception (or the Kris Humphries exception); creating a new $12.9 million exception for Rondo’s salary.

The Celtics have one year to use the exception before it expires, and gives them a very interesting trade asset for the balnce of the season or heading into the NBA Draft in June.
