Detroit Pistons vs. Orlando Magic – NBA Summer League Preview, Odds, & Prediction

The Detroit Pistons will take on the Orlando Magic at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas Nevada as the NBA Summer League schedule winds down on Monday night.

Detroit has split its first four Summer League contests while the Magic also own a 2-2 record through their first four exhibition games. This game was supposed to feature two of the top-four picks in the NBA Draft. However, the Magic will be without lottery pick Jalen Suggs while top overall pick Cade Cunningham sat in Detroit’s win versus the L.A. Lakers.

Can the Pistons keep their momentum going against the Magic on Monday evening?

Pistons Cruise To Win vs. Lakers Without Cunningham

Detroit is fresh off of beating the Los Angeles Lakers 103-86 without two of its top players. No. 1 overall pick Cade Cunningham and Killian Hayes both sat, allowing some of the Pistons’ other prospects to get some valuable reps. All five of Detroit’s starters finished in double-figures on the night. Saben Lee had a game-high 22 points while second-round pick Luka Garza continued his strong showing during the Summer League with 20 points.

Second-year forward Saddiq Bey appears to have outgrown the Summer League. More of a 3-and-D threat as a rookie, Bey has flashed improvements off the dribble during the exhibition season, showing an ability to get to his spots in the mid-range. He had a team-high six assists against the Lakers and also swiped four steals in the win. The All-Rookie performer should continue to grow on offense in his second NBA season.

Cunningham comes in averaging 18.7 points per game while shooting 42.9 percent from the field and a blistering 50 percent from beyond the arc. The rookie first-rounder has also contributed defensively too, averaging 1.7 steals and 1.3 blocks in three games. Following a clutch 24-point performance versus the New York Knicks, Cunningham earned a night off against the Lakers.  

As a team, Detroit has averaged 89.8 points per game while shooting 43.8 percent from the field and 32.9 percent from 3-point range. 

Magic Showing Grit, Toughness in Las Vegas

Orlando took down the Houston Rockets 89-76 on Sunday to get back to the .500-mark through four Summer League contests. Yante Maten had 18 points and nine rebounds while Cole Anthony chipped in 15 points for the Magic in the win.

The Magic got some bad news earlier in the week when it was announced that No. 4 overall pick Jalen Suggs would miss the remainder of the Summer League with a left thumb sprain. Suggs suffered the injury in the first half of Thursday’s game versus the Boston Celtics and will be held out as a precautionary measure. The former Gonzaga star averaged 15.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists in three games before getting hurt. Perhaps even more impressively, Suggs has flashed terrific instincts on the defensive end of the floor. The rookie guard has been a disruptor defensively, using his athleticism and anticipation to attack opposing guards.

Ignas Brazdeikis is second on the team in scoring at 8.3 points per game. Meanwhile, fellow rookie Franz Wagner is averaging 6.3 points and 4.0 rebounds per contest. He finished with 13 points in Sunday’s win over the Rockets. As a team, Orlando has averaged just 83.8 points per game on 37.9 percent shooting from the field and 31.8 percent shooting from 3-point range.
