Maryland point guard Seth Allen is transferring to Virginia Tech, ESPN reported Saturday.

Allen averaging 13.4 points, 3.0 assists and nearly 30 minutes per game last season for the Terrapins.

Allen told ESPN.com that he was attracted to Virginia Tech because of coach Buzz Williams. The junior-to-be visited the Blacksburg campus on Saturday.

“I believe he can make me the player I need to be successful,” Allen told ESPN.com. “And I think he will help Virginia Tech win a lot of games.”

Allen was expected to be a significant contributor next season for Maryland in its inaugural year in the Big Ten. Now he will have to sit out next season at Virginia Tech because of NCAA transfer rules before he is eligible in 2015-16.

Virginia Tech struggled to records of 9-22 overall and 2-16 in the Atlantic Coast Conference last season.

Maryland finished the 2013-14 season with a 17-15 overall record and was 9-9 in the ACC.
