Illinois-Chicago 87, St. Xavier 76
Forward Jake Wiegand collected his second double-double of the season, and two of his teammates added double-figure scoring as Illinois-Chicago snapped a three-game losing streak with an 87-76 victory over St. Xavier on Tuesday at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago.
Wiegand closed with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Guard Jay Harris added 16 points, and freshman forward Tai Odiase added 11 points and 10 rebounds as the Flames (2-4) improved to 2-0 at home.
Guard Larry Montuzis paced the Cougars (3-3) with 15 points. Guard Jack Krieger scored 13, guard Stanley Moore had 11, and forward Tony Core added 10.
Illinois-Chicago never trailed after Odiase’s early layup. The Flames opened a 48-34 lead by halftime after guard Gabe Snider’s 3-pointer with 54 seconds to go.
The hosts extended the lead to 20 points on Harris’ two free throws with 13:35 to play, and the advantage never slipped under nine points the rest of the way.
Tuesday’s meeting was the first since 2005. Illinois-Chicago evened the all-time series at 2-2 since the Flames joined NCAA Division I in 1981.
St. Xavier, an NAIA school located on Chicago’s Southwest Side, hosts the University of Rio Grande on Friday. Illinois-Chicago travels to Dayton on Saturday.
