Los Angeles Lakers guard Nick Young underwent successful surgery Monday to repair a torn ligament on his right thumb.

Young tore the ligament in practice Thursday, and the Lakers announced that he is expected to miss approximately eight weeks.

An MRI exam indicated that Young has a complete tear of the radial collateral ligament. The surgery was performed by Dr. Steven Shin of the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic.

Young signed a four-year, $21.5 million contract with the Lakers in July after averaging a career-high 17.9 points in 64 games last season with Los Angeles after signing a one-year deal

Last week, Lakers coach Byron Scott indicated that Young could win the NBA’s sixth man of the year. Young, 29, received two third-place votes for the award in 2013-14.

The Lakers play their first regular-season game Oct. 28 against the Houston Rockets.
