Nets’ Williams scheduled for surgery on ankles

Brooklyn Nets guard Deron Williams will have ankle surgery next week after playing most of the season in pain.

“Deron will undergo surgery on both ankles next Tuesday,” Nets foot and ankle specialist, Dr. Martin O’Malley, said in a statement. “He will have a bone chip removed from his right ankle, and the left ankle will have an arthroscopic cleanout with removal of spurs from both the front and back of the ankle. Deron is expected to make a full recovery.”

The Nets anticipate that Williams to be ready in time for the start of training camp in September.

Williams managed to play in 64 regular-season games and the playoffs with the help of blood-platelet injections, cortisone shots and anti-inflammatory medication. He averaged 16 points, 6.1 assists and 2.2 turnovers while shooting 56.4 percent from the field.

Also expected back with the Nets for training camp next season is veteran forward Kevin Garnett, the New York Post reported.

Garnett struggled in his first season with the Nets with averages of 6.5 points and 6.6 rebounds per game, but it doesn’t appear that he will retire. The 38-year-old is scheduled to make $12 million in 2014-15, which would be his 20th NBA season.
