Report: Cavs, Warriors pursue Blatt

David Blatt, the Israeli-American coach who led Maccabi Tel Aviv to the European championship this season, is headed to Golden State or Cleveland for his next job, according to an ESPN report Friday.

Blatt, 55, resigned his position in Israel this week to pursue NBA opportunities. The former Princeton player is coveted by the Warriors as an assistant to work under new coach Steve Kerr or as the head coach of the Cavaliers.

Multiple reports indicated that Blatt will formally interview next week for the Cavs’ job, which remains vacant after Mike Brown was let go. Blatt has already discussed the job with Cavs general manager David Griffin via phone.

The Cavs also have spoken with Los Angeles Clippers assistants Alvin Gentry and Tyrone Lue about the position. Both went through second interviews Friday. ESPN reported Thursday that the Cavs are interested in former Golden State head coach Mark Jackson, who parted ways with the Warriors after the season.

Kerr wants Blatt on his staff as the offensive coordinator. Gentry is also on Kerr’s radar, ESPN reported.

Only two teams — the Cavs and Los Angeles Lakers — have yet to fill their head coaching vacancies.
