The Detroit Pistons and Stan Van Gundy have reached an agreement in principle that will make Van Gundy the Pistons’ new coach and president of basketball operations, multiple media outlets reported Tuesday.

Van Gundy has agreed to a five-year pact worth about $35 million, according to the reports. An official announcement is expected this week.

Van Gundy had also been courted by the Golden State Warriors for their vacant head coaching job, but the Warriors were not willing to offer him a front-office position in addition to the head coaching duties.

With the Pistons, Van Gundy will have greater control over the roster with which he will work.

The Detroit Free Press reported the Pistons plan to hire a general manager who would report directly to Van Gundy.

Van Gundy, 54, had previously been the head coach of the Miam I Heat for three seasons from 2003 to 2006 and the Orlando Magic for five seasons from 2007 through 2012.
