Richmond 68, William & Mary 67
Marcus Thornton scored 37 points, but it wasn’t enough for William & Mary as the Tribe fell to Richmond 68-67 on Wednesday night in Richmond, Va.
Richmond led much of the second half, but forward Omar Prewitt made a jumper to get the Tribe within 68-67 with 54 seconds left.
Richmond guard ShawnDre’ Jones then missed a jumper with 19 seconds left and guard Kendall Anthony fouled Prewitt on the other end. But Prewitt missed the ensuing free throw, and the Spiders’ Trey Davis grabbed the rebound with four seconds left.
Davis missed both free throws, but William & Mary was unable to score at the buzzer.
Thornton dominated much of the game but faltered down the stretch. He committed a turnover with the Tribe trailing by two with 3:17 to play and missed what would have been a game-tying 3-pointer with 1:54 left.
Anthony and forward Terry Allen both scored 18 points to lead Richmond. The Spiders forced 18 Tribe turnovers, which helped overcome William & Mary’s 10-of-19 shooting from 3-point range.
This was the 200th meeting between the teams. Richmond has a 103-97 record against William & Mary and has won eight of the last 10 matchups.
