Led by a career night from Sir’Dominic Pointer, St. John’s remained undefeated on the young season, pulling away to beat LIU Brooklyn 66-53 Wednesday night in New York.

Pointer, a senior swingman, set a personal best with 18 points. He hit eight of 10 shots from the field, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked six shots. St. John’s (3-0) rejected 14 shots as a team while shooting 48.1 percent (26 of 54) from the floor.

After five lead changes, a Pointer dunk staked the Red Storm to a 34-33 edge with 17:40 remaining in the second half. St. John’s remained on top the rest of the way.

Red Storm guards Rysheed Jordan and D’Angelo Harrison added 15 and 14 points, respectively, while post Chris Obekpa grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.

Making their 2014-15 debut — the last Division I team to do so this season — the Blackbirds (0-1) were undone by shooting just 21 of 71 from the field, 29.6 percent.

Senior guard Gerrell Martin led LIU Brooklyn with 14 points. Senior forward Landon Atterberry compiled 12 points and 11 boards. Forward Nura Zanna added 10 points but scored just two in the second half on 1-for-5 shooting.
