Virginia Commonwealth’s Weber out for the season

Updated

on

Briante Weber, the nation’s leader in steals and a starting guard for 14th-ranked Virginia Commonwealth, suffered a torn ACL and MCL near the end of the Rams’ 64-55 loss to Richmond on Saturday, and his collegiate career is over, the school announced Saturday night.

Weber was closing in on the Division I career steals record, but will wind up just 12 steals shy of the record.

Weber, who averages 7.9 points, 4.4 assists and 3.8 steals, was driving through the down the lane when his knee seem to buckle.

Weber had MRI late on Saturday night that reveled the extent of the injury.

Weber’s loss could cripple VCU’s main asset, which is its pressing defense. The Rams had their 12-game winning streak stopped by Richmond, but they remain in first place in the Atlantic 10 with a 7-1 conference record and a 17-4 overall mark.
