US players are spoilt for choice when it comes to poker websites for real money. This presents an issue for players, as choosing which of the many sites to sign up with can be a tough task. When making this decision, we’d advise you to look at five core characteristics of poker sites, and we’ve detailed them for you below.
Selection of Poker Varieties
First and foremost, you need to ensure the site you’re considering has your preferred variation of poker. Nearly all will offer both NL and PL Texas Hold’em, plus Omaha is also offered at most sites. However, more niche games, such as Razz and Open Face Chinese, will be offered less frequently. You can learn about the more commonly found poker variations when you scroll further down this page.
Don’t forget to also delve a little further into game varieties, looking at how much you’ll be able to bet at the table and how many players a table will seat. If you don’t find the perfect set-up of your preferred game, take a pass on the site and try somewhere else instead.
Quality of Tournaments & Cash Games
Even semi-decent poker websites offer both cash games and tournaments to players. However, the quality of these vary wildly. If you’re a cash game player, you need to look at how many cash games run concurrently, whether it’s easy to find a place at a table, how many fish are waiting to be picked off, and more.
Prefer tournaments? If so, check the types available – do they offer knockouts, bounty tournaments, large MTTs, small sit n go tournaments, satellites to larger tournaments? What’s more, what are the buy-ins of the tournaments, and what are the payouts like?
Bonuses
Bonuses play a prominent role in the site a player chooses. While we believe that there are more important aspects to consider, some decent bonuses are certainly desirable. Start by looking at the welcome bonus.
How much is it worth? What are the terms and conditions like? Will you have to deposit anything to receive it?
You can then start to look at bonuses available to you after the welcome bonus has been used. Perhaps you’ll be offered reload bonuses, or maybe you’ll find cashback being offered on losses.
A chosen poker site might even find bonuses for other areas of the site that you’re interested in, such as free spins bonuses in the casino. Loyalty schemes are also a big thing in poker, so check out if one is offered and whether it really does reward you well for playing.
Payment Methods
It’s particularly annoying when you spend time signing up with a site, only to then find you can’t deposit using your preferred method. So, check beforehand to see which options are offered. Also, make sure the poker site isn’t charging fees for depositing, and also ensure payments are credited to your account immediately.
If you win, you’ll probably want to withdraw your money, so also double-check the withdrawal options too, as well as if there are any fees. Some online poker gambling sites can be notoriously slow with their payments, so also check out their processing times.
Safety & Security
Last but not least, you need to check that poker website for real money is a safe place for you to play. To find this out, see if they’re licensed and regulated by an external organization. These are usually based in tax havens, such as Curacao and Costa Rica. The logo of the regulatory body will be at the bottom of every page of the poker site – click it and you’ll usually be taken to a page detailing their license.
You should also ensure your personal and banking details are kept safe. This is done by only ever playing at a site that offers SSL encryption. If this is the case, the site’s URL will start with https, as opposed to http. Never play at a site that can’t demonstrate its commitment to keeping your details secure.
Popular Poker Variations at Online Poker Sites
Poker comes in many shapes and sizes, meaning there’s almost certainly something to suit you perfectly – as well as something new and exciting to master. You can find out about some of the more commonly seen poker variations below. You can also find Pai Gow poker sites which is a bit less famous but still as fun as the most common variations.
Texas Hold’em
Each player receives two private hole cards, and throughout the game five community cards are dealt face-up in the center of the table. The game has four betting rounds, and the winner is the player with the best five-card poker hand, which can be made from any combination of hole and community cards, or the last player standing.
Most Texas Hold’em games are no limit, meaning that there’s no limit to the amount you can bet. However, you’ll also find fixed limit, which only allows you to place bets of a fixed size, and pot limit, which only allows you to raise the size of the pot.
Omaha
In Omaha, each player is dealt four private cards. As with Texas Hold’em, five cards are then dealt into the middle of the table and there are four rounds of betting. The winner is the player with the best five-card poker hand, made from exactly two hole cards and three community cards, or the final player left standing. You’ll usually only find pot-limit Omaha at online casinos.
Omaha Hi/Lo
Omaha Hi/Lo is a complex, yet fascinating game. It works in the same way as Omaha, but the best hand and the worst hand split the prize. Because players can make multiple combinations using the nine cards, it’s possible for one player to win the prize for both the highest hand and the lowest hand.
Seven Card Stud
Players receive three cards initially, two face down, and one face up. As the game progresses, each player receives three more face-up cards and one more face-down card. The winning player is the one with the best five-card poker hand once all five rounds of betting are completed, or it’s the last player left standing. Seven Card Stud is nearly always played as a fixed-limit game.
Seven Card Stud Eight or Better
This is a game that works in the same way as regular Seven Card Stud, aside from the fact that both the highest and lowest hands will win, with the pot split evenly between them. As with Omaha Hi/Lo, it’s possible to form multiple combinations with one set of cards, meaning one player can have both the highest and lowest hands.
Razz
Razz is a lowball game, meaning that the player with the worst hand will be declared the winner. Other than that, the gameplay is very similar to Seven Card Stud.
Five Card Draw
Five Card Draw is the most basic of all poker variations. Each player is dealt five cards, which are private to them. There’s then a round of betting before remaining players are allowed to exchange some or all their cards with the dealer. Another round of betting follows, before the winner, who will have the best poker hand, is revealed.
2-7 Triple Draw
2-7 Triple Draw is another lowball game. It works like Five Card Draw, except players can swap cards three times, with a betting round following after each exchange. The winner is the player with the lowest hand, or the final player left standing.
H.O.R.S.E.
H.O.R.S.E. is a game that combines five variations of poker: Hold’em, Omaha Hi/Lo, Razz, Seven Card Stud, and Seven Card Stud Eight or Better. Each game is played for one orbit, before moving on to the next game. It’s not an easy game to play, as you need to be competent at all five variations of poker played.
Claiming Real Money Poker Sites Bonuses
One of the most exciting aspects of playing at a poker site for real money is that you can look forward to claiming various bonuses and promotions. These include exciting bonuses such as the poker welcome bonus, no deposit poker bonus, and reload bonuses. It’s important to check the requirements for claiming a bonus by reading the terms and conditions. This will tell you the minimum deposit requirements, time limits to meet wagering requirements, and whether or not a bonus code is required.
Poker Welcome Bonus
Most poker sites welcome you with a bonus, and the size of the bonus will vary, as will the requirements you have to meet. A welcome bonus can come in all shapes and sizes, but the most common poker welcome bonus is a deposit match bonus. You will need to make a deposit above the minimum deposit required to claim.
No Deposit Poker Bonus
No deposit bonuses are becoming more and more popular and are often given as a welcome treat to new players. These are smaller bonuses that are awarded to new players that register at the poker site. There are no requirements to make a deposit when claiming these bonuses, hence the name. However, the poker sites will generally add high wagering requirements to these bonuses.
Reload Bonuses for Poker
For the players who are happy with the poker site they’ve chosen and want to keep playing, there are reload bonuses. These are bonuses only available to existing players who reload their account, and they add a certain percentage to their deposit. Some poker sites require you to just opt-in to the bonus, while others require the use of a special poker bonus code.
Wagering Requirements at the Best Online Poker Sites
One thing you will notice all top online poker sites in the USA have in common is that all bonuses and promotions come with terms and conditions. This includes wagering requirements that have to be met before any withdrawals can be made or bonuses are fully released. It’s especially important when it comes to poker bonuses.
For example, take the BetOnline welcome bonus, which offers a 100% match bonus of up to $1,000. With this promotional offer, you need to earn a $50 rake to release $10 of your bonus funds. Which in essence means you get 20% of your rake back. You must ensure you meet these requirements within 30 days after claiming your bonus.
These wagering requirements can make or break the experience and the bonus offer as it will determine whether or not the bonus is of real value to you. If wagering requirements are not meetable then the bonus is not a good one. It’s therefore important to always read the terms and conditions of a bonus before you accept it.
