The season is over for New Orleans Pelicans forward Anthony Davis and guard Eric Gordon.
With the Pelicans out of the playoff chase, the two players will sit out the team’s remaining four regular-season games. Gordon was ruled out earlier and the team announced Thursday that Davis will join him on the sideline.
The reason given for Davis’ absence is back spasms. Gordon has an injured left knee.
Davis previously missed 11 games this season. The decision to sit the talented up-and-comer is precautionary. Doctors determined after an examination that he needs one to two weeks of rest and rehab.
The 2012 first-round draft pick will finish his second NBA season averaging 20.8 points, 10.0 rebounds and a league-high 2.8 blocked shots per game.
Gordon, meanwhile, is scheduled for arthroscopic surgery and expected to make a complete recovery. The injury-prone veteran has missed 151 games in the past five years.
The Pelicans (32-46) failed to qualify for the playoffs this season. Their last four games are at Oklahoma City and at Houston and home against the same two teams.
