The Detroit Pistons fired coach Maurice Cheeks, Yahoo! Sports reported Sunday.

According to the report, general manager Joe Dumars told Cheeks he was being let go Sunday morning.

The Pistons are 21-29 and a half-game behind the Charlotte Bobcats for the eighth spot in the Eastern Conference playoff picture and have won consecutive games.

Cheeks was in the first of a two-year contract with the team.

Owner Tom Gores reportedly became more and more impatient with Cheeks and was pushing for a change in the coaching staff.

Assistant coach John Loyer will likely replace Cheeks in the interim.

Even though Dumars has made eight coaching changes during his tenure with the Pistons, he reportedly wanted to give Cheeks more time — especially after their wins over the Brooklyn Nets on Friday and Denver Nuggets on Saturday.

After finishing 29-53 last season, the team fired coach Lawrence Frank, signed free-agent forward Josh Smith and traded for point guard Brandon Jennings.

The Pistons host the San Antonio Spurs on Monday.
