UNC-Wilmington 66, Towson 53

Senior guard Chris Dixon and sophomore Dylan Sherwood tallied 14 points apiece as UNC-Wilmington defeated the visiting Towson Tigers 66-53 on Monday and snapped a 14-game losing streak, the longest skid in Seahawks history.

Guard Freddie Jackson added 11 points for the Seahawks (6-20, 0-11), who had not won a game since Dec. 3 when they beat Campbell at home. UNC-Wilmington also lost 14 Colonial Athletic Association games, dating back to the tail end of last season.

Towson (16-8, 7-3) won four straight games and nine of 11 but poor shooting ended that hot streak. The Tigers went 19 of 55 from the field and shot only 15 percent from 3-point range. The Tigers, who forced 22 turnovers in their 60-53 home win over UNC-Wilmington last month. This time, Towson forced just one miscue while committing 11 turnovers.

Towson forward Jerrelle Benimon paced the Tigers with 17 points and 16 rebounds for his 16th double-double — the most of any Division I player. Benimon needs just eight more points to become the 24th Towson player to reach the 1,000 point milestone. Guard Marcus Damas, Towson’s top scorer, added 11 points and 10 rebounds but needed 12 shots from the floor to reach that total. Damas did log his second double-double of the season and the third of his career. Forward Timajh Parker-Rivera also grabbed 10 boards, scoring seven points.

Freshman forward John Davis returned for the Tigers after missing the prior 11 games due to illness, tallying two points and two rebounds.
