How We Select the Best North Carolina Online Sports Betting Sites

This is the list of criteria we check when we recommend a sportsbook. These are not the extra features that make a betting site stand out but rather the basic features we expect any sportsbook we recommend to have.

  • Range of Bets – It’s important that you have access to a good choice of markets. We make sure that the betting sites we recommend offer more than just the main three sports betting markets.
  • Choice of Events – Sports bettors like to have a range of options to bet on. That’s why we recommend sportsbooks with sports from all over the world – not just your typical US sports.
  • Bonus & Promotions – All of the betting sites we recommend offer a selection of bonuses. We look out for those that offer generous reload bonuses because it is a good sign if they are looking after their existing customers. It is preferable to simply offering massive welcome bonuses to attract new customers.
  • Safety & Security – A recommended sportsbook should encrypt your data when you transmit it. We also require them to be upfront about how they use and store your data too.
  • Payment Methods – We look for sportsbooks that accept a wide range of payment methods including bank transfers, credit/debit cards, a third party service, and at least Bitcoin. We do also recommend crypto betting sites that will not accept traditional payment methods and in those cases we look for a good range of accepted coins.
  • Customer Support – The betting sites we recommend should not cause you any issues. However, should anything arise we believe that they should provide someone to talk to. This is why we recommend sportsbooks with top customer service teams that are available 24/7.

Is Sports Betting Legal in North Carolina?

North Carolina sports betting is legal and has been since June 14, 2023, when House Bill 347 was signed into law by Governor Roy Cooper. HB 347 legalizes online wagers on pro, amateur, and collegiate sports in NC, plus horse racing. However, online sportsbooks and their respective apps aren’t up and running in the state just yet, with March 11, 2024, touted as an expected launch date.

For now, North Carolina mobile sports betting is still only available via offshore sportsbooks. While these companies aren’t licensed in NC, they have licenses in other jurisdictions. Some brands have long histories of mobile sports betting in the USA, going back more than 20 years. They are legal and trusted by countless players.

North Carolina Senate – Bills and Motions

Senate Bill 38 – This bill was introduced to launch online and mobile sports betting in North Carolina. It would have increased the sportsbook license fee from $500,000 to $1 million. The bill was supported by six Republican senators, Sen. Jim Perry, Sen. Michael Lazzara, Sen. Todd Johnso, Sen. Danny Britt, Sen. Kevin Corbin, Sen. Vickie Sawyer, and one Democrat, Sen. Benjamin Clark. It passed a house vote but was sent back to the rules committee where it died.

Senate Bill 688 – A modified version of SB68, it was introduced to allow for the regulation and taxing of sports betting in North Carolina. The bill allowed for up to 12 sports betting operators in the state. It would have also set up the North Carolina Major Events, Games, and Attractions Fund which would benefit from the taxes raised by sports betting.
This bill failed to pass in the House of Representatives by one vote. It was sponsored and supported by largely Democrat senators such as Sen. Paul Lowe, Rep. Sarah Crawford, Sen. Kirk deViere, Sen. Milton Fitch, Sen. Michael Garrett, Sen. Natalie Murdock, Sen. Wiley Nickel, Sen. DeAndrea Salvador, and Sen. James Woodard. Some Republican senators also put their names on the bill such as Sen. Jim Perry, Sen. Kathryn Harrington, Sen. Todd Johnson, Sen. Michael Lazzara, Sen. Thomas McInnis, and Sen. William Rabon.

North Carolina House of Representatives

Gov Roy Cooper signs this bill into law a week later on June 14 2023. Regulated sports betting and horse racing betting in the Tar Heel State is set to go live in between January 8 and June 14, 2024. Pros and Cons of Using One of These Online Sportsbooks in North Carolina

Offshore sportsbooks can be daunting to those who are new to them but they can also be a great alternative to retail sportsbooks. However, they offer many benefits and only a few insignificant disadvantages.

Valuable bonuses and promotions Associated risk of addiction

Cryptocurrency banking
Availability of college sports betting

Offshore North Carolina Online Betting Sites vs. Regulated US Sportsbooks

Locally regulated sportsbooks are a perfectly fine option if you want to place a sports bet online. However, there are so many more benefits when you use an offshore site.

  • Payment methods – There is a larger choice of payment methods at offshore sites than at those regulated within North Carolina.
  • Safety and security – As a result of the larger choice of payment options players can avoid sharing their private financial information across the internet by using a crypto option to deposit and withdraw.
  • Sports – The number of sports available to bet on is much smaller at regulated betting sites than at offshore sportsbooks. You will tend to get the full range of popular US sports at locally-regulated online betting sites but offshore sportsbooks will offer sports from around the world.
  • Markets – Within this larger collection of sports you will also find that there is a larger choice of markets at offshore betting platforms. Sportsbooks regulated from within the US are likely to offer the main three: moneyline, spread, and totals betting, but choice beyond that may be limited.
  • Bonuses – Of course, the fact you can claim bonuses both for signing up and regular reload bonuses is one of the most significant differences between offshore and locally-regulated sportsbooks.

Types of Bonuses Available

Bonuses can come in all shapes and sizes as well as different forms. This table below outlines all the different sports betting bonuses you are likely to encounter when placing sports bets online.

North Carolina Betting Apps & Sites for iPhone & Android

Regardless if you are using an iPhone or an Android smartphone, you can easily enjoy mobile sports betting in North Carolina. The experience is about the same, with only a few small differences.

iPhone Sports Betting

All of the best mobile sports betting sites are compatible with iPhones. The popularity of Apple devices throughout the USA makes operators focus on iOS optimization. This means users should have no issues connecting and betting on the go.

The story is the same when it comes to native sports betting apps in North Carolina. Operators often launch iPhone apps first and make them available on the Apple App Store. From here, you can easily download and install them within a couple of minutes. Extra features can include Touch ID and Face ID for signing in.

Android Sports Betting

The good news is that you won’t run into any compatibility issues on Android, either. The mobile sportsbook sites run from all of the major browsers, including Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. The layout often changes to accommodate the different screen sizes.

As for native North Carolina betting apps, availability can depend on the operator. Some sportsbooks add their apps to the Google Play Store, which makes them easy to install. In other cases, however, users can download the Android apps directly from the sites. There is usually a short guide on how to set everything up.

Mobile Site vs App for Betting in North Carolina

Now that you are almost ready to join the action, you might be asking which is better, a mobile site or a native app. The truth is that it comes down to personal preference, and we will highlight the pros and cons for each option.

Sports Betting Mobile Site

The well-optimized mobile betting sites are often the best choice for the majority of players. This is because it is compatible with all sorts of devices and is available instantly. You can connect within seconds from any location.

What we like:

  • Compatible with all smartphones and tablets
  • Supported on all of the best NC sportsbooks
  • Doesn’t take up storage space on devices
  • Faster start when first joining a mobile site

What we don’t:

  • Not as accessible as an installed mobile app
  • Some sites are not always optimized well

Sports Betting Mobile App

The alternative to using a mobile site is installing a native app, if provided. Unfortunately, most North Carolina mobile sports betting operators don’t have downloadable apps. However, these might be coming in the future, so it is good to know some of their advantages.

What we like:

  • Quick-launch icon on the home screen
  • Better designed for the operating system
  • Can come with extra bonuses and rewards
  • Access to extra features, like Touch ID

What we don’t:

  • The installation process can take more time
  • Can present mobile compatibility issues
