Is Sports Betting Legal in Georgia?
The Peach State has a lot going for it. Still, liberal gambling-friendly laws, including sports betting in Georgia, are not one of them. In fact, the Georgia constitution only permits charitable gaming (bingo & raffles) and the Georgia Lottery.
Forget about land-based casinos, including commercial or tribal casinos. However, there is one exception, The Emerald Princess Casino, a 200-foot cruise ship in Brunswick that launches from the East River into international waters. It comes equipped with 250 slots, blackjack tables, poker tables, a pair of roulette wheels, and a craps table.
Unfortunately, sports betting in Georgia has yet to be legalized or regulated. However, the icy sentiment towards sports betting (and other gambling forms) has shown signs of beginning to thaw in recent years:
- 2022: The Georgia Sports Betting Legalization Amendment may appear on the Georgia ballot on November 8, 2022.
- 2021: A Georgia sports betting bill was sponsored in January 2021 to legalize online sports betting operated by the Georgia Lottery Corporation. Although passing in the Senate, it failed to pass in the House in time.
- 2020: Republican Senator Burt Jones introduced a bill in 2020 to legalize sports betting administered by the Georgia Lottery. The bill failed to get past the committee. A second attempt to revive the original legal sports betting Georgia bill failed.
- 2018: The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), banning sports betting, was struck down by the Supreme Court.
Gambling Tax in Georgia
Given the limitations on authorized forms of gambling in Georgia, tax sources are also understandably scarce. The Georgia Lottery underpins much of this tax revenue, collected from land-based retailers and the online lottery site, via the Georgia Mobile App. Georgia allows its players to participate in Powerball and Mega Millions draws, administered by the non-profit Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL). Cash4Life is another multi-jurisdictional lottery draw, not yet available in many states, that’s found in Georgia. Georgia lottery players can participate in local draw games, scratchers, and second chance games.
The GLC must report lottery winnings exceeding $600 to the IRS and Georgia Department of Revenue. A rather imposing federal lottery withholding tax of 24% applies to winnings exceeding $5,000 regardless of state. In contrast, Georgia state imposes a more modest 5.75% withholding tax on winnings.
There are no taxes on sports betting in Georgia since it is not yet legal in the state.
What Sports Can You Bet On in Georgia?
All sportsbooks that we recommend cover the most popular ones with our Georgia state visitors. These include football, basketball, baseball, hockey, and more. Then there are other popular US and international sports covered, allowing bettors to stick to what they know for better odds of success. In-play betting gives bettors a chance to profit from opportunities as they surface or hedge their bets.
eSports Betting in Georgia
eSports betting is similar to sports betting, but you’re betting on video gaming competitions instead of sports events. It allows bookmakers to get creative with betting markets. Bettors from Georgia can get a piece of the action on first-person shooters like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, but there are other games like League of Legends and Dota 2. You may not know much about sports but with eSports, you don’t have to.
Types of Betting Markets
We briefly highlight some of the more common bets next.
Moneyline: This is the most common type where a bettor predicts the outcome of a game.
Over-under: A bettor predicts whether the combined score of a match will be over or under a number.
Parlay: Also known as an accumulator, it combines multiple bets with winnings rolled over from one to the other. Each winning bet increases the value of the wager of the next leg.
Proposition (props): This is a game side bet based on an occurrence or non-occurrence, not directly related to the outcome.
Spread Bet: A type of bet that evens the playing field between teams that are unevenly matched.
Futures: A sports bet where the outcome is decided at a later date.
Bonuses at Georgia Sportsbooks
The matched deposit bonus awards bonus money (up to a maximum) according to a percentage of the deposit value. It must be claimed when making a deposit using a bonus code. There is a minimum deposit requirement and a rollover requirement before the bonus money becomes real money. The bonus expires if not used before a specified date and applies to the games chosen by the operator. We can illustrate this best using an example.
BetOnline: 50% match deposit bonus of up to $1,000 with bonus code: BOL1000
- $55 minimum deposit
- 10x rollover wagering requirement
- Expires after 30 days if unused
- Applies to free plays on the sportsbook only
Free bets are one of the ways bookies reward player loyalty and, of course, encourage them to continue playing. For a bettor, it’s a risk-free way of making a bet. Like other bonuses, it does come with T&Cs, like a rollover requirement, and is not available for all types of games.
Sportsbetting.ag: Mobile Betting for up to $50 Free Play: claim by sending an email to freeplay@SportsBetting.ag
- 6x rollover wagering requirement
- Expires after 30 days if unused
- Credited within 24 hours of being claimed
- Live betting, horse racing, and futures are not eligible
No Deposit Bets
No deposit bets are often awarded for player signups, allowing players to wager without depositing and risking any money.

Georgia Mobile Betting Apps
Many top bookies today offer Georgia mobile betting apps optimized for the smaller screen surfaces of your smartphone and tablet. These can provide smoother and more stable sports betting Georgia gameplay. Furthermore, you can benefit from the same perks like bonuses on your Android or iOS device when using sports betting apps Georgia.
Live Betting & Streaming in Georgia
Live betting, also known as in-play betting, is an opportunity to profit from game events as they unfold. Many of the top bookies offer live streaming, so you can follow the game to identify any opportunities that may present themselves.
How to Compare Georgia Sportsbooks
There are plenty of online sportsbooks, some of which excel in certain areas. For example, seasoned bettors may consider themselves experts in several betting markets. They’ll therefore want a bookie like BetOnline with a wide range of markets. On the other hand, some bettors compare Georgia sportsbooks based on available bonuses. A bookie like BetUS is an excellent solution because of the range of promotions and bonuses. It’s always a good idea to compare payment methods in terms of range, limits, and fees. All casinos offer the basics, but some like Intertops offer a more comprehensive selection. Live betting and streaming go hand-in-hand. If you want to try to profit from a game in progress or hedge a previous bet, you’ll need to follow every second of the action. MyBookie and Bovada are terrific for their live streaming service. Finally, security and licensing are critical considerations for any bettor, so stick to providers licensed in a reputable jurisdiction. MyBookie, XBet, and Bovada display a Curacao gaming license seal.
Are Online Casinos Legal in Georgia?
Online casinos are not legal in Georgia, nor are land-based casinos, for that matter. The single exception is an East River cruise casino that births in Brunswick, Georgia. Proposals to authorize land-based casinos could be in the pipeline for 2022. Unfortunately, there is presently no indication that sentiment towards online casinos will change soon. This has left players from Georgia little recourse but to play at offshore online casinos.
DFS in Georgia
Daily fantasy sports contests are neither explicitly authorized nor regulated in Georgia state. However, as in many other states, a debate rages whether fantasy sports contests are games of chance or skill. Georgia has so far tolerated DFS, opening the door to operators like DraftKings and FanDuel.
Horse Racing Betting in Georgia
Horse racing is perfectly legal in Georgia, but pari-mutuel wagering is not. Effectively, this has made the sport unprofitable while denying the state a source of taxation. In 2019, Brandon Beach (R-Alpharetta) was appointed to serve as the Chairman of Growing Georgia’s Equine Industry Study Committee Senate Gaming and Pari-mutuel Wagering on Horse Racing. The conclusion was to allow voters to decide on whether to allow pari-mutuel betting. In 2021, a bill proposed constructing up to 3 mixed-used racetracks offering entertainment venues and retail shopping. Racebooks in Georgia State remain available only at offshore online operators that also offer Georgia sports betting.
Even though Georgia has been historically reluctant to liberalize gambling laws, it’s becoming more evident that the pressure is on for change. Still, the timeframe for the legal enjoyment of Georgia sports betting is murky at best. Given the growing tolerance to sports betting in other US states, we think it’s only a matter of time before Georgia joins the ranks.
