Is Sports Betting Legal in Minnesota?

Currently, sports betting in Minnesota is not legal at this stage (as of 2021). However, ever since SCOTUS overturned the decades-old 1992 PASPA (Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act) in 2018, the great state of Minnesota has had every right to legislate sports betting into state law.

Over the past few years, there have been several attempts at getting brick and mortar sports betting legalized throughout the state. The latest proposal, made in January 2021, saw a two-tiered system on the table. The two-tiered system, designed to ease the state into legalized sports betting, would begin with the introduction of retail sports betting only. This would then be followed up by online sports betting the following year.

However, this proposal did not have the necessary legs to make it all the way, and it quickly fell to the wayside. Sports betting fans are perplexed, since Minnesota essentially has everything in place, including brick and mortar Minnesota casinos with sports betting potential. Fortunately for MN citizens, there are no state gambling laws, or federal laws for that matter, prohibiting any resident of the state of Minnesota from placing a bet at any online sportsbook, as long as that sportsbook is  legally operated outside the USA.

Gambling Tax in Minnesota

According to the Minnesota state revenue department, all winnings derived from gambling, which includes the Minnesota State Lottery, are subject to federal and Minnesota income taxes. The state requires that all MI residents report and pay income tax on all winnings and/or prizes. This includes residents that may not have received a federal Form W-2G.

  • Minnesota Twins (MLB)

  • Minnesota United FC (MLS)

Esports Betting in Minnesota

Betting on eSports is quickly becoming one of the most popular categories to bet on in Minnesota. If you are unfamiliar with what exactly eSports betting is, it’s basically betting on teams or members of a team that compete in digital games. As with all other sports types that are available at our recommended online sportsbooks, betting on eSports is totally legal for residents of Minnesota to participate in.

This is great news for any Minnesota sports betting fans that are looking to get into a sports code that is a bit different from everything else out there. You’ll find great eSports betting options at every one of our top 10 sportsbooks. For example, if you enjoy soccer, Sportsbetting.ag is currently running a fantastic and intense FIFA soccer championship series. While this is not the same as traditional soccer (with real people), you can enjoy a wide range of betting options, just as you would with the real thing, but now all of your hopes depend on the skills of a gamer.

Other top eSports include DOTA2, King of Glory, and Counter-Strike. All of these are hugely popular and feature large and active team participation from around the world. You’ll find plenty of tournaments and championships available in each eSports category to sink your teeth into.

Types of Betting Markets

All of our recommended MN sportsbooks offer a wide range of betting markets designed to suit a broad range of interests and betting profiles. It all depends on the type of sport that you are interested in. For example, the sort of betting markets that you’ll find in an ATP tennis match won’t necessarily be the same as what you’d find in an NBA playoff or in an NFL Super Bowl encounter. With that said, here are some of the most common (and the most popular) betting markets that you will find available in most sports.

Totals (Over/Under)

A totals bet is based on how many points or goals are scored during an entire match or game. These are fun bets that are very easy to understand and to place. This is one of the reasons why novice sports bettors often start (or stick with) a totals bet.

Essentially, what you are doing is predicting whether or not the final score will be over a given total, or under a given total. The given total is set by the sportsbook and usually includes a .5 in the total (35.5 for example). This is also why a totals bet is often called an over/under bet at many top bookies.

This is how a totals bet would work in a real-world scenario:

There is a game about to be played between the Minnesota Vikings and the Giants. The bookie sets the point or total at 35.5.

Remember, this is not a bet about which team will win, but rather whether the total number of points scored during the entire match ends up being more (over) or less (under) the total set by the sportsbook.

Let’s say the Vikings score 22 and the Giants score 17 by the end of the game. This gives you a total of 39, which means that if you bet on over you would win (over the total of 35.5).

Outright Bet (Moneyline)

If you’re new to sports betting in Minnesota, then the outright or moneyline bet is the easiest way to kick off your sports betting career. This is because the outright bet is not about complicated betting factors, the bet is really simple – who is going to win the game or match. You’ll find moneyline bets in almost every top sport including football (NFL and NCAA), basketball, baseball, and many others.

Proposition Bet (Props Bet)

If you really know your sports well and are looking to spice things up a bit, a proposition or props bet may be the way to go. Here you aren’t betting on the game itself, in other words, who will win or lose or by how many points. Instead, props bets are all about more peripheral aspects of the game, like who will make the most yards in an NFL game, or who will rack up the most rebounds in an NBA game.

Props bets can be just about anything, and it all depends on the sport that you are betting on. This is what makes props bets so interesting and so fun. You can bet on what player will spend the most time in the penalty box if you bet on ice hockey, or who will receive the most yellow cards in a soccer match, or who will score first blood in a League of Legends eSports match. Props bets are virtually endless and really add a lot of spice to sports betting in Minnesota.

Point Spread

Point spreads are all about evening out an uneven contest. You’ll often come across sports events where one team is much stronger than the other team. This is known as a favorite to win, and an underdog scenario. You’ll find this in all sorts of contests from boxing to football and everything in between.

To make the match up a bit fairer, and to make a more interesting betting prospect, bookies will add a certain number of points to one team, and take the same number of points away from the other team. So, what this means is that the favorite to win (the stronger team) will have 4.5 points (for the sake of illustration) subtracted from their total, which means that they need to win by more than 4.5 points (over the loser) in order for you to win a favorite to win point spread bet.

Conversely, the bookie will add 4.5 points to the underdog (weaker team or athlete). This means that the underdog needs to win outright, or not lose by that given point spread in order for this bet to pay off. The reason why a point spread margin is always a .5, is to avoid the possibility of a tie result.

Teasers

Teaser bets are similar to parlay bets because the result is always tied to multiple bets, with the main distinction being that a teaser only applies to a single payout or event. Essentially, a teaser is a spread (point spread) bet where the point is ‘teased’ in favor of the bettor to entice a more vigorous betting action.

Accumulators (Parlay bets)

An accumulator or parlay bet is a very popular betting market, particularly in horse racing and soccer (football). This kind of bet combines a number of matches or events onto a single bet slip. These are divided into ‘legs’ and your bet wins if all of your legs (usually four to six) all come in (win). If only three legs come in out of the four, you lose the entire bet. These are somewhat risky, but are popular with bettors looking for a relatively low investment for a potentially high payout. You’ll also find that many sportsbooks will offer insurance, known as ACCA insurance where, if one of the legs lose, they will give you a free bet in your account.

Bonuses at Minnesota Sportsbooks

Our top Minnesota sports betting options all offer a fantastic and diverse range of bonuses and betting specials, designed to give you a great start with them. While it is up to each individual sportsbook to decide what type of bonus they are willing to offer their customers, the following outlines three of the most common bonus types that you are likely to come across at our recommended MN sportsbooks.

No Deposit Bonus (no deposit bets)

As the name of this bonus type implies, you can score yourself a free bet with the sportsbook, without first needing to make a cash deposit in order to qualify. These are great for checking out what a sports betting site has to offer in terms of betting markets, odds and live betting action. The best part is that you can explore the sportsbook in a real-world setting without ever risking a loss of your own funds. In most cases, you simply need to create an account with the sportsbook in order to get your no deposit free bet.

Free Bet

Similar to the no deposit free bet, but this time you’ll need to place a bet first in order to qualify for your free bet. The way that most of these work is quite simple. First, set up an account with the sportsbook, and make whatever minimum cash deposit is required for the account to be valid. Next, place a bet based on their specific requirements (type of market, minimum odds etc). Most sportsbooks will let you bet on your favorite sports, but it’s always good to check the T’s & C’s first before committing to the offer. Most free bets work on a loss result. In other words, if your bet loses, then your free bet will be added to your account.

However, this is dependent on each individual sportsbook, as some will add a free bet to your account once you’ve made your qualifying deposit with them. A good example of flexible free bet offers can be found at  BetOnline, where you can choose from two different free bet offers. Each free bet offer is based on a different betting feature that they offer. For instance, the Live Betting Free Play offer will give you a free bet on live markets worth $25. If you happen to love props bets, you can enjoy a risk-free props bet, which applies to your very first props bet with them.

Match Bonus

A match bonus, also known as a match deposit, is based on your first cash deposit with a sportsbook. These work in a similar way to cash deposits at a casino, where you are rewarded ‘free money’ according to the amount that you deposit with them. In other words, the amount that you choose to deposit is matched by a certain percentage. You can see great examples of this with most of our top recommended MN sportsbooks. For example, Bovada will match a new player’s deposit by 50%, up to a maximum value of $250. This essentially means that Bovada will add half the value of your deposit as extra cash in your account, but only up to $250, that’s their ceiling. Similarly, MyBookie offers to match your deposit by a percentage. However, in their case it’s a full 100% match up to a maximum value of $1,000. This means that they will add exactly the same amount to your account as the amount that you deposit, effectively doubling your starting bankroll.

Bookie Bonus Offer Promo Code Min Odds Expiry Date
MyBookie 100% up $1,000 MYB100 30 days
BetOnline 50% up to $1,000 BOL100 30 days
Bovada 50% up to $250 30 days
XBet 100% up to $500 XB100 30 days
Sportsbetting.ag 50% up to $1,000 SB1000 30 days

Deposit & Withdrawal Methods for Minnesota Betting

Online gambling Minnesota casinos and sportsbooks offer a wide range of convenient and safe payment methods for making instant deposits and fast withdrawals. It all depends on what you prefer to use when making deposits into your account, or withdrawing your winnings. Some players still prefer the dependability of credit or debit cards like Visa, MasterCard or American Express, which you will find at most sportsbooks including the likes of BetOnline and Sportsbetting.ag. On the other hand, you might be inclined to go in the complete opposite direction and choose to make your deposits and withdrawals using cryptocurrencies. If this is you, then why not consider sportsbooks like XBet, Intertops, or Bovada, which all offer a variety of crypto including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin and Bitcoin Cash. Payout times vary based on the sportsbook’s own payout policies, as well as the nature of the payment option that you’ve selected. However, if you take a look at a top sportsbook like BetOnline, you’ll see that they are pretty efficient in this regard, with most payouts handled in 24 hours or less. Some payment options such as check by courier can take up to 15 days or longer to get to you.

The following table gives an overview of the type of payment methods, expected payout times and minimums relating to our top ten Minnesota sportsbooks:

Minnesota Mobile Betting Apps

Mobile betting is the new way that most sports betting fans choose to engage with their sports betting platforms. This makes sense since we do live in the age of mobile communication and social interaction. The same trend towards being able to bet on the go applies to Minnesota gambling as well, and all of our recommended MN sports betting brands agree. While not every sportsbook still offers a dedicated mobile betting app, you’ll still find those that do. However, many have moved on from the dedicated betting app, thanks to huge leaps in mobile web technology (HTML5). This means that you can now access the likes of Bovada mobile sports betting or BetOnline and others in our top list simply from your preferred mobile browser. Nothing could be simple or more convenient and, since you don’t have to worry about a mobile betting app being compatible with your particular device, virtually anyone can enjoy mobile sports betting anywhere in Minnesota. This goes for virtually every Android or iOS device, as well as most Blackberry or Windows Phone phones and tablets.

Live Betting & Streaming in Minnesota

The best in live sports betting in Minnesota is available at all of our recommended sportsbooks. Unlike pre-match betting, where you bet on certain markets and events before they are scheduled to take place, live betting allows you to make bets while the action is unfolding. This gives you unprecedented betting opportunities over a wide range of betting options, particularly in spread bets, moneylines, and props bets. Live streaming is an additional live betting service that you will find at sportsbooks like Intertops and BetOnline. This service streams top sports events live, right in your betting app, and it works on both desktop and mobile devices. They’ll offer live streaming on just about any big live sports event in NFL, NBA, MLB, boxing, MMA and many other heart stopping events. Of course, just because a sportsbook doesn’t offer live streaming, doesn’t mean that their live betting offering is no good. GTBets, MyBookie and Bovada, all offer fantastic live betting, with up to the second updates on unfolding events, allowing you to quickly seize on a great betting opportunity, and cash in right there and then.

How to Compare Minnesota Sportsbooks

Before deciding which of our sports betting sites is best suited for your specific needs, we’ll take you through the process of how we select our top recommended sportsbooks for Minnesota. This will also give you a better understanding of what you should be looking for, if you choose to find a good sportsbook on your own.

Range of markets

The range of markets that a sportsbook is able to offer is critically important. At the very least, they should be able to offer excellent and well-rounded coverage of all of the top sports markets available today. Of course it also depends on in and out of season, but for the most part, you should be able to enjoy excellent betting markets in NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB, NCAA, tennis, golf, boxing, horse racing, motor sports, MMA/UFC, soccer (football), and so forth. Of course it will also depend on what your personal preferences are. Are you into a diverse range of sports, or do you just like basketball or football? In the case of the latter, finding a sportsbook that tends to specialize in specific sports may be the better option, as opposed to a more general all-rounder.

Bonuses

For many sports betting fans, bonuses play a huge role in deciding where they want to put their money. While some prefer to go it alone (without the bonus offer), many see the bonus as a quick and easy way to boost their starting bankroll. As long as you read all of the terms and conditions associated with the bonus, so you know what you’re getting into, you should be fine. So, look for online sportsbooks that offer good bonus deals, with fair and clear terms and conditions like rollover amounts, bonus expiry dates, eligible payment methods and so on.

Payment methods

Payout methods refers to all of the payment options that a sportsbook has to offer. Before selecting or committing to a sportsbook, always checkout their full selection of payment options to ensure that the one you prefer is listed. Next, click on the payment option to view the details, which includes both the minimum and the maximum deposit amounts allowed, withdrawal limits and fees (if applicable to that payment option), and whether any extra bonuses apply to that payment option. For example, BetOnline will give you a 5% boost on your bonus money if you choose to make your deposits with them in Bitcoin.

Live betting & streaming

Live betting is a must at any good sportsbook. After all, what good is being able to access premium sports betting content on your mobile or at home on your desktop or smart TV, if you can’t place a bet while the action is hot and happening? However, not every sportsbook is going to offer live streaming as well. This does not mean that a sportsbook that offers live betting but does not, as yet, have the facilities in place for live streaming is no good. You’ll need to assess each sportsbook on more than just live streaming. What are their odds of going live? What sort of bets do they offer? For example, XBet is known for offering their customers the option to customize their props bets, which works great in a live betting environment. BetOnline offers all of their new customers a Live Betting Free Play offer, allowing you to try out their live platform, essentially for free.
