What Games Can You Play at Online North Dakota Casinos?

Players in North Dakota are going to be able to enjoy a huge range of casino games. Most online casinos are lathered with online slots, often with hundreds to choose from with each.

Table games are predominantly made up of blackjack and roulette variations, but also include the likes of craps and baccarat. Our guide below will highlight each game type and which we think is the best online casino in North Dakota for each.

Slots

The number one ranked casino for online slots is that of BetOnline. They’ve got the biggest range with over 280 to play and given they utilize four game providers, the range is as diverse as you will get. Highlights include Grand Luxe and Fruity Wax.

Wild Casino also has an excellent range to choose from. It’s a little smaller in size, with 200 slots, but the quality is right there. Both casinos use Betsoft, so there is some crossover in terms of games, and it was BetOnline’s link to game developers that Wild Casino does not use, that gave them the nod. Weekly contests, slots promos and bonuses that are dedicated to slot games, are all accessible throughout Wild Casino.

Blackjack

BetUS take the top spot for blackjack games, with 34 in total to choose from. This is by far and away the biggest that we’ve tested to date. Variations include Super 7, Double Exposure, 21 Burn and Switch (mobile-ready versions), as well as game types such as European, Double Deck and Classic.

BetOnline has the biggest table limits and they are second on our list of best blackjack casinos in North Dakota. Wagers can be placed up to $10,000 on classic and European variations. They also include weekly blackjack tournaments that run across all variations within the casino.

Roulette

Bovada takes the top spot for online roulette games in ND. The casino isn’t the biggest in terms of games, but they do include American, New American, European and French Roulette. They specialize in low house edge, with the French version having just a 1.35% edge on even money bets and 2.78% on all other bets.

Ignition Casino pushes Bovada very close. They have 7 variations in total, but they can’t quite match in terms of the house edge, with all versions being a hair higher than Bovada. They do have strong betting limits, and minimum bets on some tables start from as low as $1.

Poker

All the casinos offer poker in some form, but for dedicated poker rooms, Bovada is once again the top pick. They offer a mix of cash games and tournament play, starting from as little as 1c/2c for cash and $1 entry for tournaments. You can also play poker in the casino, with video poker and Caribbean Stud games both on offer and both including jackpot side games.

BetOnline is one of the best when it comes to poker in the casino, but there is no dedicated poker room. The likes of Double Poker and several variations of video poker are all included. Max bets are as high as $500 for some games, and they can be played to clear the BetOnline welcome bonus.

Other Casino Games

All North Dakota online casinos include a good range of other casino games as well. They do vary depending on which casino you choose but given that BetOnline has the biggest in terms of volume, these would be our number one pick for games that aren’t as common as the ones we’ve mentioned above.

Other online casino games that you can access include:

  • Roll the dice
  • Spin the wheel

Is Gambling in North Dakota Allowed? The Legality of Gambling in North Dakota

North Dakota may be one of the smallest states in the US in terms of population, but they have one of the more open platforms when it comes to gambling.

Tribal casinos have been running under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988 since the early 1990s. There are six tribal casinos to choose from within the state and each of them has seen considerable updates in terms of the quality of the casino from 2013 onwards.

The state has been pushing to increase the number of land-based casinos in North Dakota for several years now. House Bill 3033 was introduced to allow for six state-owned casinos, but the five tribal families have created fierce opposition to this, citing that the state isn’t big enough to support up to 12 casinos.

Charitable gambling is legal in the state and there are currently over two dozen licenses published. These include the likes of bingo, poker, punchboards, and sports pools.

The lottery is also legal in North Dakota, however, it’s one of the smallest in the country, with just $28 million sold annually.

Poker is legal in the state and can be accessed in any of the tribal casinos as well as charity groups that are running poker tournaments. Charitable games are limited in terms of stake, a number of bets that can be made and entry fees.

Racing is legal in the form of pari-mutuel betting. Senate Bill 2211 is currently moving to create up to 10 Racinos locations that will allow slot machines in each of them (Class II gaming).

Is Online Gambling in North Dakota Legal?

Online gambling in North Dakota is illegal. This is regulated under Section 12 of the local state code. It means that placing bets on sites that are unlicensed within the state is prohibited. It also means that gambling sites such as online casinos and sportsbooks cannot set up shop and accept players from within the state.

Placing bets that are under $500 will be charged with an infraction. Bets that are larger than this could be a Class A misdemeanour.

However, there is no law that states that players are not able to wager online with sites that are based offshore. It’s a bit of a grey area, but nothing in the Local State Code mentions placing a bet online, so it is possible to bet online, as long as the site is accepting of players in ND and is not located in ND.

History of Gambling in North Dakota

Below we’ve included a brief history of gambling in North Dakota.

  • 1976 – The first gambling legislation is passed. Charitable gambling is allowed in the state through the constitutional amendment.
  • 1987 – Pari Mutual betting is allowed for the first time. Again, this is linked to charitable gambling and only allowed for charitable purposes.
  • 1990 – Tribal gambling allowed. This leads to the first tribal casinos being opened in the state.
  • 2002 – State lottery is legalized for the first time. One of the last states in the United States to do so.
  • 2005 – Online poker flirts with legislation for the first time as House Rep. James Kasper takes control of the initial bill. The bill never got to a vote.
  • 2016 – North Dakota Horse Park Races is reinstated after closing just 12 months prior. Now runs as a Racino.
  • 2017 – The first move from the state to get 6 new state-run casinos built. Heavy opposition was met in the form of the five tribal families who argued that the state was not big enough to host more casinos. As yet, no state-run casinos have been built in North Dakota.

North Dakota Gambling Revenues

Whilst North Dakota may have, compared to some states, what is regarded as a thriving gambling sector, the state doesn’t make a huge amount of money from gambling alone. The reason behind this is that most sites are charitable, which are taxed at just 1%. The total revenue from these sites is around $200 million annually, meaning the state makes just $20 million.

North Dakota makes around $6.2 million from the $28 million that the state lottery grosses each year. The tribal casinos generate around $460 million per year.

Land Based Casinos v Online Casinos in North Dakota

North Dakota has a better-than-most land-based casino climate. Given how small the state is, it’s staggering the number of casinos, both tribal and charitable.

The reality is that most of the charitable casinos are small and don’t include slots. The games are all limited as to what you can bet and what you can win, with most locations simply being an extension of a sports bar or hotel.

It’s only with online casinos that you get the full range of casino games to access. Tribal casinos may be able to replicate some of these games, but they lack in terms of bonuses and welcome offers.

Take Wild Casino as a classic example. A new account with them gets you up to $5,000 worth of bonus money. At any of the land-based casinos, you’d be lucky to get a free meal voucher. Add on the weekly promotions that Wild Casino runs and the points you can earn as you play, and the packages are poles apart.

Table limits are another area where online gets the nod over live casinos. Most tribal casinos in North Dakota are limited to $250 a bet, bet at somewhere like BetOnline you can bet up to $5,000 per hand with some table games.

Conclusion: Gambling in North Dakota

Wild Casino takes our pick as the best online casino in North Dakota. It comes with a massive welcome offer worth up to $5,000 and a plethora of casino games to choose from. The weekly bonuses and cashback rewards make it the best online casino package for North Dakota players.
